"I was what we called a “one man band.” I shot my own video, wrote and edited my stories, and anchored weekend sports."

Before he became one of Idaho’s most trusted broadcast voices, legendary sports and news anchor Mark Johnson learned his craft in the demanding, rewarding trenches of local television. For over forty years, Mark experienced a privilege few ever will, an intimate invitation into thousands of living rooms every night to bring the defining moments of our world and our community directly home.

After anchoring in major sports cities like Milwaukee and Pittsburgh, interviewing icons like Muhammad Ali, and covering multiple Olympic Games, the pull of the Treasure Valley ultimately brought him back to KTVB in 1997. Alongside navigating the nightly news and raising two sets of twin daughters, Mark always believed that community service is the true soul of television, a legacy he still champions today through his work with local organizations like Inspire Excellence and the Borbonus Family Foundation.

Each spring, Boise transforms into a living canvas of collective creativity. While the main stages of Treefort Music Fest draw global crowds, the true soul of the festival is shaped by local pioneers who build its most intimate experiences from the ground up, tracing its organic origins back to the community roots of Radio Boise.

This year, our feature steps behind the scenes of the sub-forts to explore how passion becomes tradition. We follow wine coordinator Jackie Elo of Amphora Wine Company as she curates tasting experiences at Alefort, and James Beard award-winning chef Kris Kamori of KIN alongside Katy Osuna of Copper & Heat as they foster deep culinary connections at Foodfort. For those seeking restoration amidst the festive energy, Marisa Radha Weppner and Celeste Bolin guide quiet moments of movement and mindfulness at Yogafort. Together, their stories show how a city’s creative heartbeat is kept alive by the people who return to build it year after year.

There is a quiet art to the unhurried life of a Boise gentleman. It is found in the lingering aroma of wood smoke from a backyard Weber, in the ambitious stack of mostly unread library books resting on a desk, and in the wandering thoughts of what it might be like to barbecue on the moon.

In a world where every corner of the Earth has already been mapped and claimed, the modern frontier has shifted inward. True exploration is no longer about conquering wild terrain but about embracing the daily rituals that ground us. It is the patience required to master a slow-cooked meal, the simple comfort of canned soup on a quiet afternoon, and the peaceful company of family, dogs, and home.

Ultimately, contentment in the Treasure Valley does not require a rocket to Mars or an elaborate life support system. It only takes a willing spirit, a little humor, and the appreciation of the small, beautiful moments right in our own backyards.
