Black History Facts: William Parker, the Man Frederick Douglass Helped Escape to Canada

A slaveholder rode onto free Black land with a federal marshal and eight armed men, certain he'd walk away with his property. He didn't walk away at all.

Born enslaved in Maryland in 1822, William Parker escaped at seventeen and settled in Christiana, Pennsylvania, where he built an armed self-defense network to protect fugitives and free Black families from the Gap Gang's bounty hunters. On September 11, 1851, Edward Gorsuch arrived with warrants under the Fugitive Slave Act for four men sheltering in Parker's farmhouse. Parker refused him at the door. His wife, Eliza, blew a horn from the upstairs window, and seventy-five armed neighbors came out of the fields.

Gorsuch died on Parker's ground. The government charged forty-one people with treason — the largest treason trial in American history — and every single one walked free. Parker escaped north to Frederick Douglass himself, who put him on a steamer to Canada. Parker's parting gift: Gorsuch's own revolver, lifted off the ground where he fell.

Historians now call Christiana the first shots of the Civil War — ten years before Fort Sumter. This year marks 175 years since it happened. Say his name: William Parker.
