William S. Burroughs was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on this day in 1914. The non-conformist, experimental novelist explored many lifestyles before publishing his seminal work, 'Naked Lunch.' After spending time at Harvard and with friends from Columbia, Burroughs entered the New York gangster underworld, beginning hard drug use. He did not write seriously until his early 30s. A series of terrible decisions and tragedy led to the publication of Naked Lunch—pursued by the law, Burroughs and common-law wife Joan Vollmer Adams fled Texas to Mexico. In Mexico, Burroughs shot and killed Adams trying to show off his marksmanship to friends. He had her stand with a glass bottle on her head, in an appalling and fatal "William Tell" stunt.
Burroughs gave up the son he had fathered, going on the lam to South America, and finally Tangier. Kerouac joined Burroughs in northern Africa, reviewing the stories Burroughs had been writing. Kerouac and Ginsberg helped to type the stories, suggesting a name for the project: ‘Naked Lunch.’
Burroughs would go on to be regarded as a troubled and polarizing genius of the Beat Generation. Well-earned outcry from women's groups did not stop his influence on literature and larger pop culture. Steely Dan took their names from Burroughs’ writings, and he even recorded an album with Kurt Cobain in 1992. Cobain played guitar over Burroughs’ spoken voice.

On National H**p Day, let's break down h**p's place in the paper industry. H**p matures much quicker, obviously, than a tree. A tree will take 20-30 years to make it to the mill, while a h**p plant can be ready in a few months. An acre of h**p can produce 4-5 times more paper as compared to an acre of standing timber.
H**p fibers are naturally lighter in color and require less bleaching to get to a brightness desirable by the paper industry, further reducing its environmental impacts. Along with superior recyclability, h**p fibers are stronger than wood pulp fibers. This gives h**p paper a higher tensile strength, and makes it more resistant to tearing.
All of these traits make h**p ideal for specialized applications, such as high-quality smoking paper, banknotes, and technical filters. But for the printing industry, specifically, h**p has many drawbacks. Without established, large-scale infrastructure for growth and production of raw h**p—plus a lack of mills to meet industrial quantity demands—h**p paper remains generally more expensive to produce than traditional paper. H**p at this time is not a cost-effective solution for books, catalogs, and mailings.

On this day in 1959, "the music died" when a plane piloted by Roger Peterson went down in Iowa during a night time storm. The plane was carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson. The group was heading toward another show in Minnesota. Two other band members were supposed to be on the flight in the place of Valens and The Big Bopper—one of them was Waylon Jennings.
