Love this, we need Community Solar in California.🌞

We have an enormous amount of land for solar that we're barely using.

It's called the roof.

Illinois is building community solar arrays on 60 Public Storage facilities, turning millions of square feet of otherwise mostly empty rooftop into small power plants.

Ten of the projects are already operating.

When the whole portfolio is finished, developer Solar Landscape says it will cover roughly 5 million square feet of roof, provide 44 megawatts of solar capacity, create about 300 construction jobs and generate a projected $36 million in savings for subscribers.

The community-solar part matters.

You don't need to own a house or have a sunny roof to participate. Households, businesses and nonprofits can subscribe to a nearby solar project and receive credits on their electricity bills for a share of the power it generates.

That opens solar to renters, apartment residents and people whose homes simply aren't good candidates for panels.

Rooftop projects can cost more to build than giant solar farms on open ground, which is one reason we haven't covered every warehouse in panels already.

The bill that would bring safe Plug-In solar to California passed the Senate and Assembly with flying colors and now heads to the final obstacle: getting the Governor’s signature for the bill to become law.

Can you call Governor Newsom's office today to help get this bill over the finish line?

His office number is: (916) 445-2841. Here's a suggestion of what to say:

“My name is __. I live in ___. Please sign SB 868, the bill that would bring safe Plug-In solar to California. This is a simple way to make electricity more affordable for both renters and homeowners for all types of homes. Thank you.”

Here are more details and why this is urgent:

Consumers should have as many options as possible to safely catch sunlight on their property and use it to lower their energy bill.
SB 868 will let people use Plug-In solar safely without utility permission or fees, creating a new way for both renters and homeowners to use the power of the sun.
In order for SB 868 to become law, Governor Newsom must sign it by September 30th. But the bill is on his desk now, so he needs to hear from you right away.

Canada just solved two giant infrastructure problems at exactly the same time. Across three provinces, 340 abandoned mine shafts have been repurposed into the world's largest gravity battery system. These deep holes used to cost the government $180 million a year just for environmental monitoring. Now they store the grid's clean energy. Surplus renewable power is used to haul 12,000-tonne concrete weights up the vertical shafts. When electricity demand spikes, the weights are lowered, spinning motors to release power back to the grid. Together, they hold enough energy to run all of Ontario's homes for 12 straight hours. What used to be a very expensive liability is now a massive grid asset, built entirely inside ready-made vertical drops that require zero new digging.
