More than 180,000 impressions. Zero leads.
Read that again. Not zero sales. Zero leads.
I recently met with a business owner who had used AI software to create social media content and paid advertising. Together, these efforts generated more than 180,000 impressions. And yet, not a single person raised their hand to learn more.
Through a quick strategy conversation, a few reasons became clear.
• The target audience was wrong
• The messaging was wrong
• The channels weren't chosen based on the audience
Ultimately, this wasn't a case of bad content or AI slop. The problem was the lack of strategy behind the effort. For a startup with limited resources, that outcome is both detrimental and heartbreaking.
This is why I get concerned when founders and startups treat marketing as something that comes after finance, legal, operations, and sales. This is why you can't simply reduce marketing to content, campaigns, ads, or social media. You can't just rely on doing what everyone else in your space is doing.
The part of marketing everybody sees is tactics. But tactics are not where effective marketing starts.
Effective marketing starts with understanding who you're trying to reach, what they need, why they should care, and how your business is uniquely positioned to solve that problem.
Only then do you decide what to say, where to say it, and how to invest your budget. This is how you create long-term, sustainable growth.
AI is making it easier than ever to create marketing content and execute it yourself. That's exciting because it gives so many small businesses the opportunity to grow like never before. But AI also makes strategy more important than ever.
Why? Because AI can help you do the wrong thing faster, and it will often encourage you to keep going because the output looks good.
But AI can't tell you if you're solving the right problem for the right audience. It can't tell you why you're getting zero leads from 180,000 impressions.
That's why I believe most organizations don't have a marketing problem. They have an alignment problem.
