The Mezzanatto Women

My mom is one of three sisters. Oldest daughter and everything that implies 😉. My family is filled with strong women. Like any female socialization ritual, our family get-togethers consist of lots of unfinished stories, loud laughter, and tangents. And dogs. So many dogs. There are 4 girl and 4 boy cousins, but this side of the family has always felt like a matriarchy to me. You’d have to ask the boys their side of the story.

Some of my best childhood memories were in my grandma’s house with all my cousins. My aunt found this photo and it’s taking me right back to this moment at Christmas circa 80-something. I’ve been thinking a lot about family lately. To me, family means a lot of things. Aside from the obvious relatives, it’s the people along the way who become family, the friends who you meet later and raise your kids with. It could even be coworkers you were “in the trenches” with at a horrible job and made it out to the other side. You know who you are.

As I sit by my mom’s bedside with a few members of the matriarchy, I’m struck by how similar I feel to my memory of this photo and the comfort of being together again.

Today is the first day of the last year of my 40’s.

In the spirit of having a birthday minutes after New Years, I’m sharing a few reflections on what I want more of in the coming year. Kinda like a year long birthday present to myself.

More travel. My travel list is long and I intend to chip away at it this year. Solo, friends, family.

More risks. On and off the mountain. JK on the mountain we take it slow. I’m 49 after all…

More getting dressed just because. Working from home over the past year had me in sweats and workout clothes more than I’d like to admit. I’ve been getting dressed for myself over the past few weeks and I had almost forgotten how good it feels. Almost.

More using the “good stuff” my mom gave me her diamond bracelet years ago and she’s been tucked away in a jewelry box since. I’ve decided to bring her out and add her into my jewelry rotation.

More time with the teen. He’s a junior, driving, and college is on the horizon. Soaking up ever single moment with him.

More live music. This concert with the boys was so fun. Already planning some fun ones in the coming year. I’d love to do one in another state.

More experiences. While in AZ for work, I discovered an Anna Sui exhibit (thanks to the TT algorithm.) Doing more things this year - also a perfect excuse to get dressed. Win Win.

Florida photo dump

If your kids go to sleep away camp, make friends who live across the country, and want to go visit them. Do it. New friends, so many laughs, and a new favorite place to spend time.

A few reflections

“A1A Beachfront Avenue” is not just a random line in a 90’s hip hop song.

Florida sunrises will take your breath away.

Iguanas can and might swim right up to you.

You can (and should) eat seafood at every meal.

Key Lime is a way of life.

I will never complain about LA traffic, drivers, or urban sprawl again. Driving in South Florida requires laser focus and Buddhist patience.

Thankful for amazing co-conspirators & for making this camp chatter a reality for our boys.

Florida, I’ll be back. We need a grown ups only part 2.
