🇺🇸 A little presidential history right in our Middle Tennessee backyard! Add to your bucket list the opportunity to visit the historic home of James K. Polk, our nation’s 11th President, in Columbia, Tennessee. It is absolutely fascinating a fascinating tour. You will see official portraits, furniture, and china from the White House. There is an a desk given to First Lady Sarah from Dolly Madison.

Polk served just one term as President, from 1845–1849, but those four years dramatically changed the map of America. During his presidency, the United States expanded westward all the way to the Pacific Ocean, adding more than a million square miles of territory.

The beautiful Federal-style home was built by Polk’s father, Samuel, in 1816, and James lived here as a young man while practicing law and beginning the political career that would eventually take him to the White House.

Even more remarkable, it is the only surviving home where James K. Polk lived, other than the White House.

He and his wife, Sarah Childress Polk, are buried together on the grounds of the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville.

The James K. Polk Home & Museum is a National Historic Landmark and opened to the public for tours in 1931, preserving the Polk family story for 95 years and giving generations of visitors a glimpse into the early life of America’s 11th President.

One of the things we love most about living in Middle Tennessee is discovering just how much American history is right here in our own backyard. 🇺🇸❤️

There’s just something special about Gray’s on Main. Located in the heart of historic Downtown Franklin, Gray’s is more than a restaurant, it’s a piece of Franklin history.

Built in 1876, this beautiful Victorian-era building was home to a pharmacy for more than 60 years. During its restoration, vintage pharmacy bottles and old prescription tickets dating back to 1890 were discovered upstairs. Today, many of those treasures are still on display. 💊 Be sure to look for them when you visit!

And, of course, you can’t miss that iconic neon GRAY’S sign lighting up Main Street. ❤️

🎶 Gray’s has a new chapter! Have you ever wondered about the history of Franklin’s first subdivision, Hincheyville? 🏡✨ In early 1819, Alfred Balch, Felix Grundy, James Irwin, Randal McGavock and James Trimble developed Hincheyville. 📍See the map.👉

The original 90-acre development stretched from Fair Street to Eleventh Avenue and included lots along Fair, Main and Bridge Streets. The neighborhood was named for Hinchea Petway (last photo) a wealthy merchant who had previously owned the land. His fine brick home once stood along Main Street, approximately 90 yards west of this historic marker, but torn down to build the subdivision.

More than two centuries later, Hincheyville remains one of Franklin’s most charming historic neighborhoods, filled with beautiful architecture and reminders of the people who helped shape our town. Its historic significance was formally recognized when Hincheyville was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Next time you’re traveling down West Main Street, slow down and take a look around. You’re driving through Franklin’s very first subdivision was established more than 200 years ago! ❤️
