In my artistic designer opinion, here are three essential things to have on your website:


1. CALL TO ACTION. Isn’t that why you want a website? Don’t you want people to take action and book you?
2. CLARITY. State clearly what you do, who you do it for, and what they will get out of it after working with you.
3. SOMETHING THAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU. Give people an experience, and make them feel something unique.
When was the last time you observed your website thoroughly and gave it an honest evaluation as to whether or not it is serving a purpose? It’s important to take yourself out of the equation and attempt to experience your site as a potential client. Would they book you based on what you’re presenting now?

I was your typical design student and landed in a marketing firm; I ended up as an art director for a magazine. It was great, honestly, the type of job that a designer can only dream of having. It was shiny and wonderful, but I felt BOXED IN.

The ART wasn’t there; it was just ex*****on.

Then suddenly, I was asked to design wedding albums for a photographer, and there was a moment when I felt moved and connected to the art of my work. Then, I got immersed in the world of photography and began to understand what it entails.

I get photographers to my core, to the depths of me. I understand their days, how things work, and how I can add value by putting the essential aspect of what they do to the forefront.

Designing for photographers brings me life. It’s like speaking a soul language and connecting heart to heart through our art forms.

3 Tips to Create Better Web Designs for your Clients:

1. IMAGES MAKE OR BREAK YOUR DESIGN. Provide a brand session inspiration guide to help clients nail the website's aesthetic direction. Images will make or break your design.

2. MOVEMENT. Create an experience-based website by adding moving features without overwhelming the visual eye and without affecting SEO; it’s a fine line but should be done tastefully.

3. DESIGN OFF THE PLATFORM. Create the ART first and then install it into the system, otherwise, you will feel boxed in on what you can do artistically in the design platform.

Go beyond the limits, connect with your clients, and wow them, and you’ll have the clients you dream of and the expression of art you crave!

You can’t be in control of your story all the time.

2022 — This year started on a high.

Then, it seems as soon as I pulled into my driveway after the , the entrepreneur life decided it was going to work my muscles, my mindset and my drive.

So many things became a challenge. I questioned whether it was worth pushing through.

This summer was the slowest it had been in my 14 years in business. I had to scale back. Waaay back. This territory was so unfamiliar and I felt like a failure.

BUT you know what?

Failure is only when you give up.

You can be one choice, one pívot or one client away from the biggest breakthrough of your life.

The ones that make it are the ones that don’t give up.

One of the sweetest and challenging voices in my life is of .co and I’ll never forget what she told me:

“You did not come 14 years in to stop now. You are an ARTISTICALLY BRILLIANT DESIGNER. Don’t you ever even doubt that for a second. I’ve searched long and wide and trust me-no one can do what you do. You’re another level.”

Man — we all need a Rubi.

Because she is so right.

So, with less than two months left in 2022 (can I get an Amen?!), remember where you started and remember all the people who have benefited from your gift — because it’s not over.

And know that your business crush has valleys they push themselves through often. No one is exempt.

They win simply because they don’t quit.

Now, I am more pumped than ever for 2023.

Maybe it’s because I was forced to dig back into my why, my core and my brand.

Now I *know* what it feels like for my clients.

What a high it is to invest in your business and give it the jumpstart it needs over and over again.

If you find yourself in that place, maybe it’s time for a jumpstart.

A rebrand can be more than just a design journey. It can be the burst of life your business has been needing.

I’m a words girl through and through.

Say something that hits me to the core and I’ll be riding that wave for months.

I screenshot every. one.

I’m also very deeply invested in my creativity, my skill and my drive.

So when someone validates it in this way, it revives me to keep going.

I no longer need the approval of the masses because my clients value it in ways that make the push and the drive all worthwhile.

For the last two months, I’ve been a little less obsessive over creating the most time-devoted posts or writing out all the email newsletters and fulfilling all the must-dos the voices around us tell us to ensure our business survives.

And yet…I’m surviving over here.

Yes, Instagram is my primary source for clients, so it’s understandable to make it a priority…plus, most of the time I enjoy it.

BUT somehow, when I ease up, my people still come. My business doesn’t fail.

When I immerse myself in my clients’ projects, that beautiful escape doesn’t jeopardize my business.

It all still flows. And the projects that are meant for me still come along.

So if you feel a burn-out coming on, this is your reminder that its ok to scale back, break the marketing rules for a time and press into the art that got you started in the first place.
