Our name, Slip 19, comes from a boat slip number — a marker of “home” in a working harbor in our home port of Gloucester, Massachusetts. It reflects where we come from: a community built by mariners who head out in the dark, in brutal weather, and take real risk to bring the ocean back to shore.

This week, Gloucester is grieving the loss of the F/V Lily Jean, reported lost off Cape Ann with seven aboard.

We’re holding the families and friends of those aboard in our thoughts and standing with Gloucester’s fishing community — and with the Coast Guard and all who responded. It’s a sobering reminder that seafood doesn’t come from a shelf; it comes from people.

As the biggest storm to hit northeastern Massachusetts in years approaches, it got us thinking about how much weather has become a marketing and entertainment category, not just a forecast.

Twenty years ago, most of us “checked the weather.” Now, we consume it: push alerts, viral maps, dramatic language, endless model screenshots, and headline-ready terms that travel fast.

And we get why it happens. Weather sits at the intersection of:

· public safety (people need to prepare)
· attention economics (everyone’s fighting for clicks)
· platform dynamics (the spiciest graphic wins the feed)

But here’s the branding problem: when everything is framed as historic, catastrophic, or once-in-a-lifetime, the message gets diluted. We get desensitized. We scroll. We argue about inches. We make jokes about lack of reliability. We stock up on bread, milk, and eggs. We miss the real point — impact.

In brand strategy, we talk a lot about the gap between what you say and what people understand. Today’s weather coverage has those types of gaps, too:

· Color can imply certainty when there’s uncertainty
