It's tempting in marketing your brand or business to not exclude anyone. Our intuition says to broaden our message and broaden our appeal, which will get us more customers. In reality, the generalized message that results ends up not hitting home with anyone in particular, and gets lost in the vast online junk that we scroll through daily.

Instead, find the ideal customer for your business, and talk to them about their problems and your solutions directly, in the words/phrases/shorthand that they use in their life and business. That will resonate on a deep level, and they will be drawn to connection with you because you "get" them.

A good example is Red Bull, an energy drink company. You most likely know their tag line - "Red Bull gives you wings." They are focusing in on a very specific group of consumers..not the tired moms who need a boost, the guy who's been up late and needs to get to work on time, or the teenager getting through exams. They are speaking directly to the adventurers, the thrill seekers, the participants in extreme sports. And by doing so, they can connect to that person on a deep level.
