I did say it would be a *quick* break from my bird photos, right? This a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. I adore the contrast of his colors, and the way the red patch on his chest really grabs your attention. This picture was taken at one of my favorite places to be, Blandford Nature Center.

A quick break from all my bird photos…This is an Eastern Cottontail Rabbit! It’s probably a female. Some of the females get used to me because they nest in my yard and they let me get just a little closer than they normally would, like when I took this photo.

This is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk. While nearly full grown, you can tell this youngster from a mature adult by it’s tail and eyes. It’s tail is banded and a light brown, as opposed to the more solid rusty red of an adult. It’s eyes are also a paler yellow compared to the deep brown of an adult. Maybe it’s young age explains why it tried to make a meal out of a full grown Mallard the other day….and failed. 😂

This is Clifford. Clifford is a male Northern Cardinal that lives around my home. I’ve known him and his mate for about 2 years. Clifford looks a little rough here, and it’s not because of the rain. Every summer, he loses all the feathers on his head and goes bald. This picture shows him at the beginning of this odd molting process. It happens mostly to Northern Cardinals and Bluejays, and the reason is unknown. It doesn’t seem to adversely affect them, however, and Clifford more than makes up for his lack of lovely red head feathers with his VERY loud (but beautiful!) singing voice. I can’t wait to wake up to his song again this spring. ❤️🎶

I don’t always take the time to do a lot of photography in the winter, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity! A mixed flock of gorgeous Cedar Waxwings and American Robins have found our campus well-stocked with fruit, which makes up a large part of both birds diets, especially in the winter when insects are scarce. Pictured here are the lovely Cedar Waxwings, a personal favorite bird of mine.

Wow so it’s been a minute! I spent the summer documenting the work of a family friend that works as a biologist and monitors the ecosystems of several local golf courses. Here you can see adult Tree Swallows bringing food back to their nests for their chicks.

I usually enjoy capturing the comical expressions and personalities of lemurs, but this one looks somber. With the shadow of the wiring across his face, it almost seems as if he’s wondering how it would feel to live outside his enclosure, to be free. He was most likely born into captivity and has no idea what it is like to live outside this tiny space he’s been confined to his whole life.

Had a great time shooting for this amazing travel softball team, Eclipse, this summer. Go team! (May I add that I designed their logo as well? I’m not just a photographer, I do graphic design too. 😉)

I love capturing wildlife. It’s a challenge to catch them in action and I struggle to do justice to their majesty in my photographs. It’s also a humbling experience, to be able to witness God’s creation in all its glory and showcase it’s beauty to others. And I know to most these are just seagulls, annoying birds that crowd the beach and steal your food. But in their own unique way they are beautiful, if you see them the way I do through my lens.
