Guardrails to Growth is a wrap!

Last Wednesday, we filled the LaFleur office for a Tech Week Grand Rapids conversation about what AI marketing actually looks like when compliance is part of the job.

Thank you to our co-hosts at Mentavi Health and to Lauren Szalai for building this with us. Thank you to our panelists Chip LaFleur, Corey Hart, and Zara Smith for the kind of honest answers that only come from people doing the work. And thank you to Brano Vargic for moderating, keeping the room sharp and the conversation moving.

And last but not least, thank you to our guests! If you have any questions or would like to keep the conversation going, don't hesitate to reach out.

Ask anyone here who keeps this place on the rails, and you'll get one name.

Meet Bob Flavin, our Executive Vice President. Sales, creative, digital strategy, and project management all run through Bob, and he's the Integrator behind the EOS system we use to keep the whole company rowing in the same direction. He also owns our technical SEO, which sounds like a strange pairing with all of the above until you watch him do both in the same afternoon.

Here's the specific version of what he's good at. Bob takes a big idea and asks the unglamorous questions. Who owns it? When is it due? Does it actually make the client money? A lot of ideas don't survive that. The ones that do come out sharper than they went in.

Most of the team reports to Bob, and the reason that works is simple: he's straight with people. You always know where you stand, which is worth more than almost anything else in a manager.

Outside the office it's family first, golf a close second. Both, he'll tell you, take more patience than he naturally has.

Glad you're in this seat, Bob.

Your clients are asking ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews their legal questions before they ever open a search results page.

That changes the job. It's not only where you rank anymore, but whether AI systems see your firm as credible enough to reference.

Our updated guide covers the six things that build that credibility: authority signals, schema markup, credible sourcing, answer-first content, original research, and a consistent entity presence.

No tricks, no guarantees. Just the signals that make your expertise easy to verify.

Azriel (Azzie) Cook, our Chief of Staff, recently took second place at the American Dahlia Society's national show at Frederik Meijer Gardens. She's been growing dahlias in her backyard for years, but this was the first time she's ever entered one in competition, which meant learning a whole new set of rules about how a bloom is judged. Getting a dahlia ready for show turns out to be months of planning: starting tubers indoors well before the first anticipated frost-free date, fertilizing on a schedule, disbudding early and correctly, staying ahead of pests, and timing the cut so the bloom peaks the morning of the show.

Her variety that placed is a formal decorative 8-12" dahlia called Ketchup & Mustard. She came home having learned more than she expected and already planning her strategy for next year.

Congratulations, Azzie! And thanks to the West Michigan Dahlia Society for bringing the national show to Grand Rapids.

Two days out. Wednesday, we open our doors.

Everyone in healthcare, legal, manufacturing, and financial services wants what AI can do for their marketing. Nobody wants the compliance headache that comes with it.

That's the whole premise of Guardrails to Growth: AI Marketing in a Regulated World, our Tech Week Grand Rapids session. Compliance is an advantage, not a brake. Chip LaFleur sits down with Corey Hart and Latchezara (Zara) Smith of Mentavi Health, who do this work in healthcare, which is about as strict as it gets. Get it right there and it holds up just about anywhere.

Panel, live audience Q&A, then a networking happy hour in our space.

Wednesday, September 16, 3:00 to 5:00 PM
LaFleur Marketing, 549 Ottawa Ave NW #201, Grand Rapids

Bring the compliance question that's been stalling your team. That's the part we actually want to get to.

The AI marketing conversation is often missing important context.

Every week brings a new tool, a new prompt framework, or a new claim that everything just changed. What almost never follows is an account of what happened when someone actually gave it a go with a real deadline and a compliance review.

That gap is where the useful knowledge lives. We don't want to know what a tool can theoretically do, but whether it survives contact with a regulated industry, a skeptical stakeholder, or a client who has to put their name on it.

That's where we're putting our focus. What have you seen work in practice that the case studies never mention?

Page one of Google is no longer the only place where a firm gets found.

More people are asking an AI assistant for a recommendation and calling one of the names that come back. I's a different discovery path with rules that aren't quite settled yet.

What looks valid about this new landscape so far?

Being cited elsewhere carries more weight than it used to. AI systems lean on sources that other credible sources already reference.

Specific, answer-shaped pages get pulled more often than broad service pages. "What does a wrongful death claim cost in Michigan?" does more work than "Wrongful Death Attorney."

Google Business Profiles, directory listings, and reviews all feed AI answers. A neglected listing is a visibility problem now.

Nobody has this frontier fully mapped, us included. What other questions do you feel are worth considering?

Our read on AI when it comes to writing is that it's strong in the middle of the process but weak at both ends.

In the middle, it's genuinely useful at outlining, restructuring something already written, spotlighting the questions patients and clients actually ask, and turning one long asset into several shorter ones.

But at the very front of the creative process, it can't originate a point of view nobody gave it. And at the back end, it can't be fully trusted to produce something a state bar or a compliance officer will read.

That's why we don't think of AI as a replacement for writers, but more a way to give writers more room for the work a machine can't do: interviews, positioning, and judgment calls.
