ChatGPT won't replace me anytime soon...
I hear this all the time on Linkedin, or at least I did (I see it less and less each day). I think that even those who were skeptics of Ai when it first hit the mainstream are now realizing that it's at minimum something to be concerned about, and at maximum may have already replaced them.
I'm in the latter group. To me, the writing's on the wall. If you believe that "you won't be replaced by Ai, you'll be replaced by someone else using Ai"... I think you're not preparing yourself for what is coming.
It's probably true that if you work behind a computer and you're not actively using Ai to make yourself better and faster, you'll probably be replaced first. But I think that we should do far more. We should all be preparing for what comes after Ai can do everything you can but much better, much, much faster, and much, much, much cheaper.
What happens when CEOs have a tool that can save them 97% of their staffing costs, plus give them 10x the output? I don't think we're far from this being a reality, and I also think that those who think otherwise are doing the equivalent of burying their heads in the sand.
To me, we need to do more than implement Ai into what we do; we need to reinvent ourselves as experts and leaders in the Ai space so that your CEO keeps you, and only you, to do the replacing of everyone else.
Maybe that's extreme, but the reality is that we don't know... as in no one knows the full effects Ai will have. What we do know is that Ai has already done vastly more than anyone (including those who created it) ever imagined, and it's less than a year old.
I think we're better off fully preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. Anything less than that means you're likely on the chopping block first.
It's not an easy road, that's for sure, but it's necessary. It's why when I first learned of ChatGPT in January of this year, I panicked and fully believed that this was the end of my role as a video editor, and I was right. Sure, I'm still making video content for clients today, but my pricing has dropped a lot already and continues to go down because more and more people can do more and more of what I could only do last year, and they're doing it faster and cheaper.
It's also why I've devoted all of my time since then to learning everything I can about the newest Ai tools, to help business owners implement these tools. I figure if you can't fight 'em, join 'em – 'em being the Alien life form we're calling ChatGPT, released into the world this year.
I could go on and on, and will in later posts. But for now, I think you should take this seriously. This isn't fear-mongering or "taking things too far," this is seeing the obvious writing on the wall, IMHO, and adapting fast, hopefully faster than everyone else around me. You snooze, you lose - for real this time.
But, maybe I'm way off. What do you think? Is AI a friendly, helpful tool that "could never replace you"?
