For those don't read beyond the headlines:
The law requiring men ages 18–25 to register with the Selective Service System has been in place since 1980. The only thing changing is that they no longer have to fill out a form to register and be in compliance with the 45+ year-old law. The draft system is NOT being activated; it exists as an emergency backup plan. And it couldn’t be activated without congress approval.
No one has been drafted into military service in the U.S. since 1973. Warfare itself has changed drastically since then. Technology reduces the need for huge troop numbers. Our current military is stable and is NOT short on voluntarily-enlisted members. It would take a prolonged, multi-front war that involved major players like Russia and China or a Hollywood-style alien invasion to diminish our military to the point for the need of a draft activation to even be a thing.
There’s no need to worry about an oncoming draft; unless you just want to worry about it.
