Maybe some new Roger Rabbit in the future?
Author and creator Gary K. Wolf has confirmed that the copyright for Roger Rabbit has officially reverted back to him. This marks a significant shift in ownership of the beloved character and associated works.
In a recent statement, Wolf said:
“I now have back the rights to all my characters, all my books. I can, basically, do my own Roger Rabbit projects.”
This reversion includes the rights to Wolf’s original novels—such as Who Censored Roger Rabbit?—and potentially paves the way for independent projects centered around the iconic character, separate from Disney’s 1988 adaptation Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
Why It Matters
• Gary K. Wolf now holds full creative and legal control over the Roger Rabbit universe from his original books.
• It opens the door for new adaptations, sequels, or spin-offs under Wolf’s direction, outside of Disney’s domain.
• This marks a rare case of a major pop culture property returning to its original creator, decades after its mainstream breakthrough.
While there’s no official announcement yet of what Wolf plans to do next, fans of the zany toon-noir character will likely be eager to see what “independent Roger Rabbit” could look like.
