Feeling pretty lucky that some of my most favorite people are who I get to work side by side with everyday. Through all the crazy we always have each others backs and make each other laugh and feel seen. Everyone used to tell me not to mix friendship, family and work but I honestly couldn’t imagine another way.

UMU 2.0- We rebranded as a team and we are so excited to share our new sexy logo, what it means to us and the process we took to arrive at this point as one team with one dream!

Moʻolelo:
While it is assumed knowledge in most logo branding and design processes, it is still worth mentioning that the UMU logo was designed together in partnership with its designer, the owner/founder and the entire staff of the company. This is important to note because of the great mana that has been bestowed upon this logo and the kuleana it carries both internally and externally.

The UMU logo is an abstract modern illustration with multiple hidden meanings to it:

What we see with our eyes:
At first glance, we see a beautiful opened yellow umbrella. The viewer can interpret this from two positions. One being under the umbrella or two viewing it from the top down. Both ways are correct as it depicts the grand purpose of the umbrella which is that of providing shelter from the elements. It’s this gesture that UMU extends to its clients; being a shelter from the storm of whatever may arise and providing a safe space for folks to feel comforted.

The yellow of the umbrella represents a vibrant sunny disposition and invites the viewer to feel those same happy feelings of joy. It is offset by the contrast of the deep blue that distinguishes a point to draw the viewer’s attention to the center of the logo, inviting them into the space. The two secondary colors, coral and aqua act as accent colors but also retain the playfulness of UMU that balances out the hard work ethic ingrained in the UMU culture.

What we may not see (kaona):
The UMU logo was designed with the intention of having a layered depth of understanding. When we train our eyes to focus on the negative space, we can see multiple lines that connect to a center point. These lines represent pilina (connection) to each other and the greater community. The lines drive the eye to the center point and connect in the middle and represent the safe space we create for ourselves and our community.

The yellow of the umbrella here represents the blossoming of the ‘ilima flower. ‘Ilima is used in the creation of lei and for medicinal purposes and was often seen as an adornment for ali’i. Here it represents UMU’s home of O’ahu and echoes the blossoming beauty and purposefulness of the company. The deep blue hue you see at the center of the design mimics that of the deep ocean waters. The deep blue represents the wai that each UMU staff has imbued upon the logo and it acknowledges the hopes and wishes of connection, gratitude, healing, aloha, pilina and community.

What we see in our hearts:
Pilina is translated to English as a deep connection or relationship. If the word looks/sounds familiar it's because it is closely related to pili, which aside from being a grass used to thatch hale or used in the sacred practice of hula, (and coincidentally also shares the same name of the sister company Pili Group) it also means to bind together or to cling. When thinking about what UMU does, the word that kept presenting itself was connection. I would see it in the interactions that we have with clients, in the interactions we have with each other and in the interactions we most importantly have with ourselves. Each relationship affects the other and they are the bonds that tie us to this work, this community and to each other. Our pilina is what binds us to all things and it is integral in all that we do.

We are greatful for the friends, clients and community we have had the honor to work alongside the past 13 years (Amanda's lucky #) and we look forward to the many new friends and partners of the future. Now what kind of branded items should we make?
