In the span of about a year, Valerie Denise Reed lost her brother, her mother, and her husband—while raising three children who were just three, eight, and nine years old. She describes that season as “the dead walking,” moving through days she barely remembers, surviving only by God’s grace and the responsibility of motherhood.
A proud Prairie View A&M University alum twice over, Valerie took the strength, community, and faith forged on The Hill and poured it into a calling she never asked for: giving grief a voice. When couple friends drifted away and support faded, she decided no other widow around her should have to walk alone, and she created Hearts in Harmony in Houston as a space for widows to connect, share, and heal together.
Today, while continuing her work as an educator and special education advocate, Valerie is building a nonprofit, growing her grief support platforms, and stepping into a new season of travel, joy, and hope as her children become adults. Her life is a living reminder that you can be utterly broken and still be beautifully rebuilt.
