⚠️ Not every leader is a speaker.
⚠️ Not every speaker is a speech writer.
⚠️ And not every speech writer can train leaders to speak.

Yet, very often, organizations task the first Comms person they see with writing the ED’s latest address.

And EDs who aren’t great orators very often step in front of the mic… without training.

… or even worse, they task the speaker training to their in-house Comms director… who happens to specialize in media relations (that’s not the same).

Speeches are too important to task to the first warm body or biggest ego in the room.

This week, we’ll be talking about the specialties used to develop and maintain relationships.

You may think some of us can fill that role because we work so closely with the full team, especially those who carry specialties in standards writing and team communications, but alas…

WE ARE NOT HR. We shouldn’t be given:
👉 Hiring and onboarding
👉 Team events
👉 Policy development

Now, DO COLLABORATE with your Comms department on those things, though.

They’re job is to take what you have and infuse the brand along the way.

Your team CANNOT be effective without processes and systems.

Now, the responsibility of all operations SOPs are not the responsibility of your Communications Department (more on this later).

But most Comms professionals must have a strong sense of writing SOPs, as ask the full org to support content efforts for:
👉 Social media
👉 Blogs/newsletters
👉 Appeals
👉 and everything else telling the stories of your org. and it’s impact.

To be clear, not all Comms professionals know how to think in standard processes.
💁‍♀️ That’s when you bring in a specialist.

Many of those processes and workflows can be automated 🙏 Gotta love technology.

Unfortunately, most of this tech has come around while we were building the traditional structure.
💁‍♀️ That’s when you bring in a specialist.

As someone with a strong voice and personality, I always got the note, “It’s not what you said, it’s how you said it.”

As 1 of 7 in a blended family, teamwork was a way of life. With a single mom working through school, I teamed up with my big brother to manage the household responsibilities and frustration ran high when there was:
