Meta for Creators describes distribution as "the process of matching users with content they find engaging, entertaining and informative."
This process has two parts.
1οΈβ£First, it filters every piece of content through the following questions:
βοΈWhat content has been posted? What posts are available from friends, other creators and Pages that we can show?
βοΈ Who might like this content? We consider a multitude of signals such as who posted the content, when it was posted, what was the topic and past user behavior, among others.
βοΈ How likely are people to engage with the post? We try to predict how likely a given person is to engage with your post and find it meaningful. We make a variety of these predictions for each piece of content.
βοΈ How interested will the audience be in this post? Based on all of the data we have gathered on the post, which pieces of content should get priority?
2οΈβ£Second, Facebook decides how to distribute your content.
Historically, Facebook has been a way to connect with friends and family, your existing network of contacts. This is the people who follow you. Facebook calls this "Connected Distribution."
More recently, they have established "Unconnected Distribution," a way to grow your audience beyond your network to people you don't directly know, but who may be interested in your content. This shows up in the feed as "Suggested for You" or as a share re repost from another user.
Stay tuned for best practices for optimizing content for unconnected distribution!
