At Leap + Pivot, we often work with people and ideas that transform places, communities, organizations, relationships, the game, and more. And at times, figuring out how to get it all done requires lots of energy and little sleep. So we like to keep ourselves motivated by thoughts of authentic and relational leaders who understand that sometimes there is no playbook or example for you to follow, so you have to be yourself first and show up well in what you do and how you do it. As I updated my “motivation/vision board” for my desktops a few days ago, I thought about the hope that Vice President Kamala Harris represents for so many people from all walks of life. I also remembered the uniqueness of being the first of one minority demographic of an entire nation, then the significance of representing multiples of first at once came to mind. First woman vice president. First Black woman (and Black person as VP). First woman of Indian descent. And she brings with her the first second-gentleman and the most richly diverse family ever represented at the national political level.
There is no roadmap from this point and for all that is in front of her. No one has ever done what she is about to do and how she will do it will look different than many of us have ever seen or considered. She will be celebrated, embraced, and loved by many. However, she will also find a new level of criticism and face the attacks that we (Americans) continue to allow from those who take issue with intelligent, graceful, and powerful women (or diverse) leaders. I would ask us all to prepare to extend her the respect that she deserves as a skilled and accomplished public servant. However, I believe she is more than capable of taking care of herself.
And because of her leadership, at times under the pressure of great scrutiny, she will remind us all (in particular women, black and brown people, children of immigrants, etc.) that being the first is not always easy. Still, when you’ve earned it, do not let anyone else diminish it or you because of their inability to recognize what you bring to the table. Keep going. Keep smiling. Keep thriving. Keep serving excellence.
Congratulations, Madam Vice President!
