Big changes last night at the Walnut Twp. Fire / Rescue (Montgomery County, IN.) as the department now faces major staffing shortages after approximately half of the department reportedly walked out of a meeting and turned in their radios and pagers.

According to Fire Chief Kyle McHargue, ongoing issues involving a board member led to the situation escalating. Chief McHargue stated that firefighters requested the board member resign, and when that did not happen, several members chose to step away from the department.

This developing situation raises serious concerns about emergency response coverage and the future of fire and EMS services for the community. Residents are encouraged to stay informed as more information becomes available.

Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Statistics for March 2026

(Indianapolis, IN)- The Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) is responsible for enforcing both state and federal regulations on all commercial motor vehicles (CMV). Major tasks include conducting Safety Inspections, New Entrant Safety Audits, and Compliance Reviews to ensure compliance with equipment and hours-of-service regulations.

CVED is also tasked with enforcing Indiana’s size and weight laws and ensuring that commercial carriers are properly registered and paying their fair share of fuel tax dollars. Additionally, they assist in the investigation of commercial vehicle crashes (post-crash inspections) and manage the annual school bus inspection program.

From March 1-31, 2026, because of their enforcement efforts, ISP CVED accomplished the following:

Total CMV Inspections Completed – 4,705

Total Out of Service Drivers – 499
Total Out of Service Vehicles – 579
Total Number of Oversize Violations – 34

Total Number of Overweight Violations – 174

ISP CVED Personnel participated in the annual March portion of the International Fuel Tax/International Registration Plan Law Enforcement Advisor Committee’s (LEAC) M&M Blitz.

Nationwide IFTA permits, Unified Carrier Registrations, and IRP plates (both required for interstate commerce) typically expire on December 31st of each year but have a 90-day grace period. The provides a 90-day window for motor carriers to come into compliance with “soft enforcement.” Soft enforcement means that unless there is an egregious violation, a warning is typically issued, and the violation is documented on an inspection report.

Annually, beginning April 1st more strict enforcement begins. The LEAC March blitz serves to gauge the level of compliance leading up to the end of the grace period on March 31st. ISP will again participate in second, May, blitz period to identify the level of compliance after “hard” enforcement begins. The following is CVED activity for the March blitz:

As is usual, it is sent by text. Something we never do for official documentation. There is no name or identifiers on these either. A definite red flag. Also they still haven't quite perfected the state seal. And those Indiana Codes (IC) are not the right codes for the listed offenses!!

PUTNAM COUNTY, INDIANA — March 21, 2026

What started as a routine DOT inspection quickly escalated.

Indiana State Police say a trooper stopped a semi on I-70 and uncovered 100 pounds of methamphetamine—along with a handgun in the cab.
Estimated street value: $500,000.

The driver, Kemar Brown, 33, of California, was arrested and booked into the Putnam County Jail.
Facing:

• Dealing M**h (Level 2 Felony)
• Possession of M**h (Level 3 Felony)

Another routine stop…until it wasn’t.

Open Call: Putnam County Sheriff’s Volunteer Mounted Patrol and Search Team

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is exploring the formation of an all-volunteer Mounted Patrol and Search Team. The Sheriff’s Office has discussed internally (The Sheriff) the many benefits of mounted units, including enhanced search capabilities, patrol support at public events, and positive community engagement. Earlier this year, during the search for a missing person in Putnam County, we experienced limitations due to the absence of these resources.

Since that time, two Putnam County residents have stepped forward with a proposal to establish a Sheriff’s Posse. While this concept may be new to our area, it has a long-standing history in law enforcement. With this in mind, an organizational meeting has been scheduled.

Individuals interested in discussing participation in this team are encouraged to attend or to send a representative to obtain informational materials and take part in the discussion.
