Once a business is past about fifteen software subscriptions, two of them are doing the same job and neither department knows the other one exists.
Marketing bought a scheduling tool. Operations bought a project tool that also schedules. Somebody in sales pays for a form builder while the website already has one. None of that is anyone being careless. It is what happens when purchasing decisions get made by the people closest to the problem and nobody is looking across all of them.
Finding it is not clever work. It is one person reading twelve months of statements with the question "what does this do and what else do we own that does it" in front of them. That review usually pays for itself the first time it runs, and then it keeps paying because it stops the pattern from restarting.
The savings are real. The bigger win is that somebody now knows what you own.
