Women's netWork

Women's netWork Imagine the Power of 100 Women Who Care Manistee County who gather four times per year with a willingness to contribute $100 each to an organization.

I founded the Women's network in May 10, 2005. The organization is an opportunity for women to network with other professional women around the world. Empowering women to do what they want to do - - providing support and networking opportunities - - is all a part of what can be accomplished when exceptional women share strengths and expertise. In October, 100 Women Who Care Manistee members gave the Onekama Guild Thrift Shop $11,500 toward renovations of their delightful store in Onekama. The Guild has been a significant supporter of the community by offering affordable goods and clothing and by providing needed funds to area projects. Our membership is proud to come together to support the Guild. Imagine the Power when 100....or more...Women join together...at a one hour meeting...to support our local agencies!

Attention Knitters... Crocheters..Quilters...
I have a special request from a local friend who works with visually impared children. She is working on a state-wide training with other specialist... to provide families with babies born with visual impairment... a floor mat. She specifically is requesting mats, or baby blankets, to be 3 foot x 3 foot or more in size. Solid black...no pattern...a simple Crochet or knit pattern.. with a white, cream, or yellow contrasting border....so a 3x3 black with white trim border baby blanket. These will be given to families with visually impaired babies to give them a place to play and learn on the floor. Please share this message....and contact me for more information. They can be dropped off at my home. She would like as many as possible by the end of October to take to the state conference training in November. Thank you!

Here is Gloria’s monologue from BARBIE in its entirety:

It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we’re always doing it wrong.

You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can’t ask for money because that’s crass. You have to be a boss, but you can’t be mean. You have to lead, but you can’t squash other people’s ideas. You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men’s bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you’re accused of complaining. You’re supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you’re supposed to be a part of the sisterhood. But always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It’s too hard! It’s too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says thank you! And it turns out in fact that not only are you doing everything wrong, but also everything is your fault.

I’m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us. And if all of that is also true for a doll just representing women, then I don’t even know.

Karen F. Dunigan always found it interesting that one of her greatest ideas was born from something as simple and basic as baby cribs. It was during lunch one day in 2006 in Jackson, Michigan with executive leadership from the Center for Family Health, where other fundraising matters were being disc...
