This is Banned Books week and typically it’s a time for the bookish types such as myself. But the way things are going these days reminds me that reading is as much a cornerstone of our democracy as protesting or voting or volunteering for your favorite candidate.

Freedom of speech is power.
⚡️
Freedom to access and exchange ideas is power.
⚡️
Freedom to debate and discuss those ideas is power.
⚡️
Freedom to use your voice is power.
⚡️
Freedom to read is power.
⚡️
It’s a power that many great Americans before us fought and sacrificed for on the battlefields, in the press, and on the streets. It’s a great responsibility, one that demands us to work hard, challenge ourselves, and push our boundaries. We shouldn’t give that up that power because the work is too hard or the ideas too controversial. We owe to those great Americans before us to fight for those powers and to do the work that freedom demands of us. It’s the least we can do.🇺🇸📚💙
