Dress to impress? Do you think the dress affects professionalism or performance?
"The power of a watch. The clothing you wear speaks volumes about you long before you open your mouth, and talks to everyone around you. Feeling powerful today."
Years ago I worked for a PEO company, my first day was shocking, fun and unforgettable, I used to wear suits because of my background as a Lawyer.
That day I wore my best suit, tie and shoes, and when I arrived I looked around and I said.. wrong company!
My boss was wearing jeans, and the CEOs of the company wearing t-shirts and shorts and flip flops, I was, …. really!? It was employee appreciation day.
Don’t get me wrong, this is Houston Texas y'all, and everything here is big, including the hot weather. I had the best BBQ and Shiner beers and it felt like home. I had a smile on my face for a whole week after that day.
I used to dress to impress. I was told “It’s not just about performance”, and “Fake it ‘til you make it”, you should look like a successful leader.
Later on, I decided to become my own boss and created FCruz Media. A business that creates video , photo , website and content solutions for other companies and businesses. And so now, I only wear jeans and mostly black shirts, caps and my favorite guitar shoes.
What I learned:
Creativity comes better when you are relaxed.
Is not about your attire, but about your mindset.
What we wear does not affect our ability to do our job (at least not in a typical office environment), but it does speak to our attitude toward that space.
We’re clearly moving to a more casual environment where hoodies and jeans are a suit to the most professional in the industry.
To a twenty-five year old startup guy or gal, professionalism is a hoodie and jeans. To a fifty-three year old Madison Avenue executive, professionally dressed is, at the bare minimum, a dress shirt and jacket.
Agree? Disagree? Would love to hear your thoughts.
