Sometimes a job comes in and we never find out what it's even for.

A customer sent us a description of what he needed, and that's it — no backstory, no "here's what it does." Just: make this, in two sizes. So we did.

Here's the fun wrinkle though. He wanted the two sizes to have the same size holes. Sounds simple, but you can't just shrink the whole thing down — that shrinks the holes too. So the body scales and the holes stay locked. A little more thinking than "hit print," but that's the fun part.

Here's one that surprises almost everybody: the same part can be strong or fragile depending on which way it was standing when we printed it.

A printed part is built in layers, stacked one on top of the next. Push across those layers and it holds. Pull them apart and it splits like a stack of paper — sometimes at a fraction of the strength.

So a bracket printed flat might snap in your hands. Turn that exact same bracket 90° on the build plate and it'll take a hammer. Same file. Same material. Same printer. The only thing that changed was which way it was standing.

This is a big part of what you're actually paying for when you have a part made instead of downloading one. Before anything prints, we're asking where the load goes and orienting the part so the layers work with it instead of against it.

Here's something that surprises almost everyone: making a 3D printed part solid doesn't really make it stronger.
Most people assume 100% infill = tank. It doesn't. It mostly means a part that takes 4x longer to print, eats 4x the material, and warps as all that plastic cools and fights itself.
The strength is in the walls. A part with thick perimeters and 20% infill is often just as strong as the solid one — and a fraction of the weight and cost. It's the same reason a bone is hollow and an airplane wing isn't a solid block of aluminum.
So when we quote a part, we're not just hitting "print." We're deciding where the load is going and building the shell to take it.
