Our beliefs shape everything we do - how we see the world, interact with it, and how we interface with each other. That simple fact means knowing the beliefs of your ideal customers, your potential clients, and your current clients cannot be understated!
Here's why:
When it comes to business, BELIEFS make up the 3 core reasons potential customers won't buy from you (in the words of Jesse Elder):
1) They don't believe in the product or service.
2) They don't believe in YOU.
3) They don't believe in themselves.
It's hard to articulate just how important these 3 areas are.
What does that mean for us as business owners?
Well, we've got to meet our potential customers where they are (addressing their concerns and thoughts about what's possible), be open about who we are (by regularly showing up, being open, and being honest), and regularly sharing results of the work we do.
BELIEFS & CURRENT CUSTOMERS
If you've ever lost a great client without being able to figure out why, then you KNOW beliefs run central to effective relationships and open communication with current clients as well.
In my agency now, I do my best to regularly ask, "How do you feel? How does that sound?"
Here's the hard part:
There is no playbook about what's always right, but if you don't know what your client is thinking... you can't help them.
The stories in their mind matter.
Some clients will always tell you - it's their nature and personality to be open.
But... some clients will not tell you.
They stay quiet when they are worried and keep things bottled inside. You feel like things are going great, but they're having worries and hesitations. This can be the kiss of death for the project - they're giving up on you, themselves, or their product... and you have no idea it's happening.
Nothing is more important than making this open communication a part of regular talks, which I do with my clients on a regular basis.
It can be scary to ask your clients how things are going (because sometimes the answer is not so great!), but I've learned it can make or break relationships. Be willing to have those conversations, approach them with openness, and you can develop long-term, healthy relationships!
If you're still reading, I hope you've found this helpful! It's been KEY in transforming my business. 😊
