It’s more important than ever to be completely self-aware of HOW you are being influenced through social media and by WHO you are being influenced. Being mindful (aware) of your thoughts, actively protecting them and also being SLOW to form opinions are all important habits to practice while you digest information and news online. Just check out this super scary NATO research project... just the latest in how easily influenced we can be by people with agendas and bad intentions.

*The good news is, Facebook has actually grown much more aggressive in spotting and shutting down these fake troll accounts. Instagram still has some work to do...

With $60 and a few fake Facebook accounts, researchers were able to identify service members in a military exercise, track their movement, and even persuade them to disobey orders.

As social media’s influence over politics and elections has risen, so too has our collective anxiety about it. Over the last three years in particular, the use of megaplatforms like Facebook and Twitter as vectors for misinformation has been the subject of congressional hearings and not a few columns on the websites of some of our finer magazines....

We may have more to fear from wealthy donors than from geopolitical adversaries like Russia.

I’m sitting here watching the Westminster Dog Show in bed and thinking that I need to get a full night of sleep tonight. I think that every night. And every night I end up justifying one more episode of whatever I’m binging, while scrolling social media. There is so much conclusive research out there showing how nighttime screen time sabotages our sleep. One of my goals this year is to be more deliberate about my screen time, especially at night. Have you implemented any nighttime routines that work? Have you found that it makes a difference in your sleep?

After a season of really bad press due to an unwavering demand from Twitter users for regulation and governance on the platform, it comes as no surprise that reports released by the company yesterday show a steady decline in monthly active users. Despite revenue gains, stock was down by 8% the night before, leaving investors unhappy. Many feel like CEO Jack Dorsey isn’t doing enough to rid the site of fake accounts (actors), spam and violence, with an outcry for issues such as viscous bullying, violence and the malicious culture in general be addressed immediately.

What are your thoughts? Is Twitter still useful? Relevant?

We are all made up of stories... but the only one you know entirely is your own. When you scroll through the pictures of other people's lives, be careful of the stories your mind makes up to go with them. Do your narratives make you feel critical or fill you with envy? Do they build or break your confidence? Are your stories painted with judgement or in celebration? Ask yourself if the stories that you’re telling yourself about the lives of others make you feel better or make you feel worse? Being mindful of the thoughts you have while spending time online can make this pastime a much healthier experience.
