New data from United Way of Greater Knoxville highlights a reality many working families know all too well: having a job doesn't always mean being financially secure.

ALICE stands for “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed,” which represents households with one or more individuals who are working but still struggle to afford essentials.

According to the latest ALICE Report, 41% of Tennessee households live below the ALICE threshold, meaning they struggle to afford basic necessities like housing, childcare, food, transportation, and healthcare. In Knoxville, nearly half of households fall below that threshold, with some neighborhoods experiencing rates as high as 80-88%.

These findings help shine a light on the challenges facing working families across East Tennessee and underscore the importance of community partnerships, economic mobility initiatives, and support systems that help families move toward long-term stability.

The Bijou Theatre's Jubilee brought a full evening of music and community to support the historic theatre🎻🎶🪕

With performances from local and nationally acclaimed artists including Margo Price and The Deslondes across indoor and outdoor stages, the fundraiser turned Gay Street into a gathering place for music lovers. Guests danced the two-step, shared tables under the lights and helped raise critical funds for the Bijou.

Thanks to Inside of Knoxville for highlighting both the celebration and the impact of the support it inspired. Read the article at https://insideofknoxville.com/2026/06/cowboy-hats-boots-two-stepping-the-evening-away-at-bijou-jubilee-2026/.

“Recent changes to the federal student loan system have created meaningful gaps for medical and healthcare students, and EdMed was developed to address those realities,” said Barbara Thomas, chief operating officer of SouthEast Bank and head of the ELFI division.

To help address evolving federal loan changes, ELFI has launched EdMed, a private student loan program designed specifically for students pursuing high-cost medical and healthcare degrees.

EdMed offers financing for up to 100% of the cost of attendance, multi-year eligibility, flexible income and cosigner requirements, and residency deferment options designed to support students from the classroom to clinical practice. To learn more, visit https://elfi.com/student-loans/

Small business owners are sending a clear message: people-first banking matters. 📊🏦🧑‍💼

At the conclusion of Small Business Month, SouthEast Bank released new survey findings highlighting what small business owners value most in a banking relationship. Key findings from nearly 200 small business respondents include:
• 94% say personalized service is important
• 93% say local loan decision-making matters
• Personalized service ranked higher than both competitive rates and digital banking tools

The survey reinforces an important takeaway for community banking and beyond: trust, responsiveness and local relationships continue to drive customer loyalty. We’re proud to help share meaningful stories and insights from clients making an impact across Tennessee communities.
