For those of us who work in website development, most of us have believed outdated plugins and themes are the reason for most hacked WordPress websites. A report out recently sheds light on the real threat. One that might not be on your radar.

60% of hacked WordPress websites were due to stolen session cookies. 33% due to plugin and theme vulnerabilities. And about 7% due to compromised login credentials. That goes against the common thinking of most developers.

What does this mean to you? An easy first step is to make sure you log out of your WordPress website every time you use it. This will make the session cookies worthless. Second, if site security is critical to you, then you should consider implementing additional security measures to reduce or eliminate session cookie concerns.
