Response to a nonprofit organization considering a three year contract with Wix or a move to GoDaddy:

Are you fine having your most important asset (your website) controlled and possessed by an organization other than your nonprofit? That’s your current situation as Wix is renting you space on their proprietary platform. GoDaddy provides domain registration and proprietary software for website creation; which one you are being urged to move to is unclear. What is clear is that there is no valid reason to use GoDaddy for anything and that ideally your entire website would be built on open-source software that your nonprofit owns and controls (e.g. Wordpress). As for three year commitments, in this era of rapidly changing technology do you truly believe that your choice today (as a non-expert) will truly benefit your organization by locking them in for three years in order to save a small amount of money?

Wordpress powers over 400 million websites, so there's a high chance you use it every day. It's open-source (i.e. free), and in knowledgeable hands it can accomplish just about anything you could realistically hope for from a website.

All of my 15+ websites are built on Wordpress and I imagine I will be using it for many years to come - regardless of the powers of AI, which will never be able to make the innumerable choices that go into creating an extremely powerful, well organized website. Happy birthday Wordpress! 🎉
