The POWER of Leverage & 477 Reasons (Dollars) I'm Glad I Leveraged DLJ's Business Travel Spending Beyond Cash Back & Other Rewards Cards. Click Images to see the results!
When you’re a business owner, you’re going to have expenses. You’re also going to try to find every way possible to use those accrued necessary expenses to your advantage.
After watching a video on how a business digital nomad leveraged his airline cash back card with a Groupon cash back reward – by way of Ebates – plus an additional Groupon Vacations discount to save almost $200, I wondered how this type of leveraging would work for DLJ’s business expenses.
As a traveling consultant, I have hotel, air, and cash back rewards credit cards that I use for business. Ebates wasn’t new to me and I knew how it worked but I never used it because I saw it as a “store to door” personal shopping tool. But I decided to do a trial run and use it with DLJ for one year to see if I could leverage business expenses into meaningful dollar returns.
$477.00 later it is a RESOUNDING YES despite 70% less onsite travel last year. Ebates cash rebates average from 1% to 15%, with travel averaging roughly 5% - an average higher than most cash back credit cards.
So, how can a business trip be leveraged to earn cash back? Here’s how based on one of my trips.
Need a hotel? I used a hotel (Marriott) rewards credit card to earn 1% - 2% and sometimes as much as 12% cash back ($77.00 and $93.50 on two trips at 12% and 10% respectively) on hotel stays (Images 2 & 3)
How about a rental car? I used my Marriott card again to receive double Bonvoy Rewards points and 2% cash back renting with National.
Rather use a rideshare service? Take Lyft rides and receive cash back. If you’re a Delta Skymiles member, earn Skymiles for each ride AND double Skymiles for airport rides through Delta’s Lyft partnership.
Ordering In? DoorDash has you covered with 4% cash back on all food deliveries.
And you don’t have to stop there. I received cash back for office supplies (Office Depot 2.5%), phone and tablet cases (Anker 4%), new business cards and stationery (VistaPrint 3%), a laptop backpack (Lenovo 8%) and more.
Pennies make dollars and over the course of a year and they made 477 of them for DLJ.
