Showcasing a fresh new look for Books For Change 📚✨

Books For Change is a group of educators turning gently-used book sales into real action: funding organizations on the front lines of gun reform to keep students, staff, and communities safe.

As a former elementary teacher, the Books For Change mission is incredibly close to my heart. And getting to build this brand and website for my friend Courtney (BFC founder + the gal with the vision) made it even more meaningful!

When we were chatting about her creative direction, Courtney shared that she wanted something confidently feminine, artful, and inviting.

This brand definitely breaks from the mold of a traditional nonprofit design. ✌🏻

Solidifying your brand’s Creative Direction is always the first step in my design process, so before Adobe Illustrator even pops up on my screen, we’re spending time:

- Working through your detailed questionnaire on our kick-off call (which is so much fun! 🎉)

- Curating visual descriptors to guide the branding process 

- Crafting a unique and beautiful moodboard

As I was wandering this weekend, I really started leaning into the word “handcrafted” and why it sets something apart. I browsed everything from pottery and embroidery, to baked goods and farm fresh florals...each vendor was showcasing such a unique talent!

Using “handcrafted” in my own brand positioning was such an intentional choice (definitely inspired by my love for makers + all things vintage), so I wanted to dive into what that really means to me as a brand and web designer. 💛

Ever stood in your closet, already overheating post-shower (I blame my hairdryer for this), convinced you have absolutely NOTHING to wear? This was me last week. Ok, fine…and a lot of other times too!

Hot weather, a full closet, and somehow nothing.

Nada. Zip. Zero.

That is until I made one (kinda rebellious) decision that accidentally made my whole day better.

Spoiler: I have zero regrets about it. 😉

The designer part of my brain can be difficult to turn off, especially on a quick Target run! It’s like an elite game of ‘I Spy’ 🎯

When I’m strolling down the aisles (more likely speed walking if my toddler is in tow) my eyes are always on the lookout for the details like fonts, colors, and packaging.

Those three things all communicate so much about a brand at first glance 👀

And I promise, your clients are “playing” the same game too - making split second judgments about your brand before they’ve even read a single word.

This is why branding isn’t just aesthetic. It’s truly one of the most important investments you can make in your business, and every detail matters!
