📖 Time for a Knock Out® History lesson! 🌹

In 1992, rose breeder Will Radler sent the then unnamed Knock Out® Rose to Star® Roses and Plants for testing and trialing. It quickly became obvious that this new rose genetic was unlike anything seen in the market. It was special. The beautiful, deep pink-to-red petals grew vigorously and with minimal maintenance. In fact, the flowers would bloom, and rebloom, and rebloom again without regular pruning, fertilization, and pest control. It was eventually introduced to the trade in 1999.

Last year we celebrated 25 years of Knock Out®, but did you know that this is rather unusual in our industry?

Typically you'll find that some time after a plant is introduced, it eventually gets replaced with better, brighter varieties. The success of the Knock Out® Rose tells the story of how this beautiful flower has stood the test of time with gardeners everywhere.

Knock Out® or Double Knock Out®?

The original member of The Knock Out® Family, ‘Radrazz’ is a shrub rose that set a new standard in disease resistance with little to no maintenance required. The bloom cycle produces rich cherry red, hot pink blooms that will continue until the first hard frost. It is black spot resistant, drought-tolerant and self-cleaning.

From the same cross that produced the original Knock Out®, Double Knock Out® represents the next generation in The Knock Out® Family of Roses. The full, double flowers look just like a classic rose. It is as resistant to black spot as the famous original, has the same bloom cycle, and is slightly more winter hardy.

📖 Time for a Knock Out® History Lesson! 🌹

In 1999 when 'Radrazz', or the original Knock Out®, was introduced to the trade, it set a new standard in the rose industry. The introduction of this rose made it possible for everyone to grow beautiful roses without having to deal with the issues that easily plague traditional garden roses.

Knock Out® doesn’t look like a rose nor does it behave like a rose, but you don't have to spray it, it reblooms all the time, and you don't have to deadhead it. The majority of your effort will be putting it in the ground and watering it. 🪏

📖 Time for a Knock Out® History lesson! 🌹

Today the Knock Out® Rose is a groundbreaking rose beloved by gardeners everywhere, but it wasn't immediately accepted by rose companies when it was first developed by amateur breeder, Will Radler, back in 1992. In fact, it faced rejection by multiple companies before one finally took a chance on this special plant.

What was the pushback at the time?

Knock Out® simply wasn't a traditional rose. Companies were hesitant to add a rose to their catalog that didn't look like a traditional rose, or act like one.

Thankfully, Richard J. Hutton, former chairman of the board of Conard-Pyle Co., took a chance. In 1999 the original Knock Out®, ‘Radrazz’ was introduced to the trade.

National Knock Out® Rose Day is an officially recognized date? This day is is celebrated annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day, and honors the beautiful, revolutionary Knock Out® Rose and its iconic clusters of deep pink blooms.
