Emory Douglas had a pen and a newspaper, and he used both to fuel a revolution. As the Black Panther Party's Minister of Culture, he created the striking graphics that gave the Black Power movement its visual identity for over a decade. His work showed communities their own strength and proved that when design serves a purpose bigger than profit, it becomes a force for real change.

In the early 1960s, J. Walter Thompson would only let Caroline R. Jones in the door as a secretary. So she became a creative director anyway.

She went on to become the first Black female VP at a major ad agency and spent her career proving that marketing to Black audiences wasn't a niche move, it was smart business. Brands like Campbell's and Goodyear saw their culturally targeted campaigns perform so well they brought them to national audiences.

She didn't wait for the industry to catch up to her vision. She just kept building. That's the blueprint.

In 1969, Byron Lewis wasn't getting a seat at the table, so he built his own. He launched UniWorld Group, one of the first major Black-owned ad agencies in the U.S., when the industry was still shutting Black professionals out.

Lewis connected with communities that mainstream brands ignored and proved that authentic marketing drives business. He landed major clients like AT&T and Ford, earned the title "Original King of Black Media," and trained over a thousand creatives who went on to build their own agencies. That's legacy.
