What a wonderful evening last week ....Young Storytellers is a wonderful organization that pairs elementary school students with creative mentors, who work with them one-on-one to nurture and cultivate their playwriting abilities. At the end of the semester, professional actors bring their plays to life with live performances. “The BIGGEST SHOW” is an annual fundraiser that celebrates the plays of five young students, distinguishes them among their peers and showcasing their creative narratives with an All-Star group of actors. Comedy comes to life as the actors use their improv skills to delight the packed theater. It is inspiring to develop the voices of future generations and beautiful to see young creative talents gain confidence and recognition. My dear friend won the “Mentor of The Year” award and was celebrated for her decade of work with young students and distinguished among the thousands of mentors.
Highlights of the evening included depicting pigeons who fly to freedom. In another play, and hilariously depicted feuding fashion designers in the elite world of Dubai Fashion and the chaos, competition, and rivalry that creates an unlikely friendship. One student casted to play a talkative chopstick alongside “sister Chopsticks” and who overcome the odds to reunite. There was a young playwright who created a world of mystery forests, with helicopters, jewel thieves, and disco dancers. Another young writer envisioned food condiments who come to life as rappers, battling it out to rise on the music charts—while staying fresh. We celebrated a night of laughter and creative performances among other like-minded entertainers and mentors who really care about nurturing raw creativity and helping bring the dreams of students to life.
Overall a magical night of creativity, joy, talent, and laughter. Not including ticket sales and business sponsors, the patrons and guests donated over $75,000 in a matter of less than 10 minutes during the donation-push short break. @ The Theatre at Ace Hotel DTLA
