Food For Thought - 2/12
While driving to work this morning, a funny thought came to mind. What if life isn’t just like a box of chocolate? For those who are auto enthusiasts, the best analogy to describe life is to compare it to driving a manual transmission car.
Picture yourself driving on the road and rolling through the gears. First gear, second gear, third gear… Before you have the satisfaction of shifting into a higher gear, you see the traffic light 30 feet ahead of you changing from green to yellow, to red. At that exact moment, you reduce your speed and ultimately coming to a complete stop with your gear is in neutral. Once the light turns green, you put the car in first gear and give it a bit of gas to proceed. The car picks up momentum, the engine noise gets louder, the needle on the RPM gauge moves towards the larger numbers. Off the gas, clutch in, you pull the shifter towards you, dropping the car from first to second. Feet right back on the gas pedal, acceleration picks up, and engine noise becomes more audible. You get ready to shift into third. At that moment, this not-so-friendly driver in the next lane decides to merge right in front of you without signaling. You step on the brake; felt the car instantaneously loses speed. More importantly, the car starts to shake because your power output is disproportional to the higher gear ratio. Again, clutch in, bring the gear back from second to first. Everything goes back to normal again. Moments later, traffic ahead of you clears up. You once again roll through the gears. First gear, second gear, third gear… Stop sign ahead. Foot off the gas, clutch in, put the car in neutral and let it coast towards the stop sign… For the next 10 – 15 minutes of your life, you go through this manually repetitious cycle of clutch, shift, gas, and brake. Finally, you turn into an open road. Foot down on the pedal, first gear, second gear, third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear…
Every effort we make and every action we take builds momentum. The acceleration of the car is every little thing we do in our lives that build momentum. The action of applying clutch and switching gears are key decisions we make in life that brings us to a different level. More often than not, we meet unexpected obstacles and traffic signals along the way that force us to start all over from neutral again. But if you love yourself like you love driving, you find ways to make the journey an experience. You see the shifting of the gears and stops and goes not as chores, you see it as a way to make yourself a better driver. You become more patient, you become persistent, you become more confident because you know once in a while the road will open up and allow you to exercise all that you’ve learned; to roll through all the gears and to unleash the true potential of the driver and the car.
