Before there was a festival, there was the avenue.
From the 1920s through the 1940s, Central Avenue was the heart of Black Los Angeles — the "Harlem of the West." Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday stayed at the Dunbar Hotel. Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, and Buddy Collette grew up on these blocks. The music ran until dawn.
Then the avenue went quiet. But it never lost its memory.
Since 1996, the Central Avenue Jazz Festival has brought it all home — free, at 42nd & Central, in the shadow of the Dunbar itself. Not a memorial. A continuation.
This year, the Arts Pavilion carries that legacy into visual art, with 100+ artists exhibiting where the golden age lived.

Mark the date: Saturday, September 19.
The Central Avenue Jazz Festival returns to its historic corridor — Central Avenue between MLK Boulevard and Vernon — and La Mancha Gallery returns with it, curating the Arts Pavilion once again.
For one day, the street that gave Los Angeles its jazz legacy fills with three stages of live music, food, marketplace, and community. Inside the Arts Pavilion, that legacy takes visual form: artists whose work speaks the same language as the music around them.
Free admission. 11am–7pm. Family welcome.

Presented by Councilmember Curren D. Price Jr. and The New 9th, in conjunction with the Coalition for Responsible Community Development and Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles.

Every Sunday afternoon, the Historic Dunbar Hotel does what Central Avenue has always done — it gives a fresh new voice the room. Our weekly showcase spotlights a different artist every single Sunday, live from 2:30 to 4:30 PM at Delicious at The Dunbar. Part of the magic is not knowing who it'll be until you're in the seat.

Her name for this painting tells you everything: "We Live and We Die", The Element of Love.
In our newest video, we take a close look at X. Darvi's canvas for Women of Central Avenue: Keepers of the Flame — a green-skinned woman crowned with roses on one side and flame-colored leaves on the other, meeting your eyes while a restless night sky breaks around her like water around a stone.
X. Darvi is both a painter and a singer, and this painting holds a note the way her voice does: sustained, unhurried, in full command of its becoming.
Watch the full critique, then come meet her gaze in person. The exhibition has been EXTENDED through the end of July at Delicious at The Dunbar, 4229 S. Central Avenue — with our Sunday jazz showcase spotlighting a fresh new voice every week, 2:30–4:30 PM.
