Q: What would happen if hedgehogs and bats suddenly became bipedal?
A: They’d walk like they’re on stilts and possibly p**p themselves uncontrollably…? — as we learned from Janelle ... yesterday.

Q: Is this an urban myth, or does Italian have different words for different kinds of love?
A: It’s more or less the same in Italian as in English, but Hungarian, Turkish, Japanese, and Greek for example do recognize and name many types of love. — explained Iara Matuonto…

Q: What is an example of a cooperative that is working well in SoCal?
A: Cooperacion Santa Ana. Some of their work includes building out daycare co-ops and running a community-owned farm and coffee pop-ups. — A shoutout to them by Ricardo…

Q: Why do we have butts?
A: It’s because of our exaggerated lumbar curvature, which likely evolved as we started having bigger babies (with bigger brains). It makes our butts look more pronounced than those of our ancestors. Neanderthals’ butts would have looked flat.

Do you enjoy asking important questions like these of today’s leading scholars? Then you should start attending our speaker series, 😁 Or at least watch the recaps on Youtube!

Thank you to the three amazing speakers: Dr. Alfredo Carlo ( ), Dr. Iara Mantenuto ( ), and Dr. Jeanelle Uy ( ).

And thank you to all who came, listened, laughed, learned about rotational births and oversized human babies, the mathematics of corporate greed, dictionary writing, cross-cultural collaboration, and so much more.

And of course, thank you to The Nickel Mine for being such an awesome venue.

A huge thanks to everyone who came out to the Nickel Mine last week for our March Brains Uncorked event!

On Tuesday, Alicia Partnoy discussed how transforming Martina Ramirez’s life into the book "Happier as a Woman;” Martina Ramirez reflected on how her decades leading a hands-on research lab for underrepresented STEM students shaped her leadership in higher education; and Désirée Zamorano shared how she highlighted the overlooked history of the 1930s mass expulsion of Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals from Los Angeles through her novel "Dispossessed.”

We’re so grateful to these three professors for sharing their work and for rising to the 10-15-minute lecture challenge.

We’ll be back at the Nickel Mine on Monday, April 27, with Dr. Iara Mantenuto and Dr. Alfredo Carlos from CSU Dominguez Hills and Dr. Jeanelle Uy from CSU Long Beach. Further details and an RSVP link are coming soon, so stay tuned.

The true gift of my work is that it puts me in conversation with thinkers like Janet Sternburg.

Seeing her always makes me reflect on what I'm focusing my energy on, what ideas I'm holding on to, what writing and art have had an effect on me as of late, what it means to cut away the unnecessary excess to reveal the heart of, well, everything. When so much of our life feels rushed, our culture cheapened, soulless, AI-driven, and when the essays and books at the forefront of conversation are so much less nuanced and human than they used to be, Janet still has a way of bringing us back to what matters, and finding beauty in the everyday. I'm always inspired by her marvelous, original ways of thinking.

Thank you for making time for breakfast with me while you were back in Los Angeles, Janet!

We're gearing up for the promotion of "The Essential Ingredient: Remaking Ourselves in Times of Crisis" and are happy to start working with Award-Winning Author, TEDx Speaker, and Thought Leader Keri Mangis, Writer on the book and other projects.

Keri speaks and writes for those navigating times of transition, questioning old beliefs, and seeking deeper meaning in an increasingly chaotic world.

She bridges ancient wisdom with modern realities, inviting readers and audiences alike to reclaim their agency, reimagine their roles, and move through life’s thresholds with greater clarity and power.

Her work has appeared in Spirituality & Health Magazine, Star Tribune, Elephant Journal, and more.

Her first book, "Embodying Soul: A Return to Wholeness," received multiple awards, including the 2020 IPA Award for Mind, Body & Spirit and the 2020 Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal in Non-Fiction Spiritual and Supernatural.

Keri’s forthcoming book, "The Essential Ingredient: Remaking Ourselves in Times of Crisis," offers an illuminating exploration of personal and collective transformation—an urgent call to evolve consciousness and reclaim meaning in uncertain times.

All my fellow gardeners know: this is the time we pull our back and at least two other muscles and hope not to fall from the ladder and also not to chop our arms off with the chainsaw! 🤪

Dangers aside, gardening is the best stress relief...
