Vermont Independent Media/The Commons receives grant. Today, it was announced that The Commons has been selected to receive a $100,000 grant from Press Forward, the nationwide movement to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news. Press Forward awards $20 million to 205 local news outlets – including one in every state – for their work closing persistent coverage gaps. We join these local newsrooms across the country that are filling critical information gaps and working in service of our communities. Since 2006, The Commons has served as Windham County’s source for local news and views.

Free and open to all, Vermont Independent Media, publisher of The Commons celebrates its 20th anniversary on Sunday, October 6 from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Retreat Farm, North Barn to honor and thank the community that has been integral to its success. The party promises to be a joyous occasion filled with music, community spirit, and a few surprises.

For the first time, Vermont Independent Media will present two special awards – The Community Partner Award which will be presented to a business to honor and recognize their commitment and vital role in successful collaboration that brings a community closer together.

The second award will honor a community member whose generosity in supporting nonprofits and special projects has made a lasting difference.

Party-goers will enjoy historical displays and copies of the earliest issues of the Commons, including historical images, articles, awards, original vision statement, past advertisers, writers, and contributors in the first edition, old and new logos, fun facts, etc.

Also featured will be performances by local musicians Bard Owl and Peter Siegel, an anniversary cake, raffle prizes, light refreshments, and more.

It's all about EsteyFest - a Passion for Organs! Dean Eckmann from Montreal shows Bill Czelusniak from Northampton his harmonium which he built especially for EsteyFest ’24. It is based upon the design of a Parisian art harmonium with a 1910 Billhorn keyboard. It has two sets of reeds, one a Parisian set by Estève, and one a new set of Indian reeds for Celeste. The harmonium is made of recycled wood-figured cherry with leather detail and handmade paper bellows. Eckmann is a professional organ builder and created his harmonium in 250 hours of free time last summer.
