⚰️ So I watched neil degrasse tyson talk about the brain drain happening in this country right now and I kept thinking about how it starts way before people start leaving our country to study elsewhere. It starts in our own classrooms.

So many of us grew up with a version of american history that was more myth than memory, edited down to protect some people’s comfort and bury what actually happened to the rest of us. You can’t drain a brain that never got the full truth to begin with.

Breaking for anyone who still needs to hear this. The National Autistic Society confirmed officially that autism is genetic. 💚

And I think about what that means for every generation before mine that carried this without a name for it. Every family member who just thought they were wired wrong. Every Black woman especially who masked so well that nobody ever thought to look closer.

The diagnosis did not start with us. We just finally get to know.

I just keep thinking… if respectability politics worked, why has every generation had to do it all over again? 😮‍💨 How many times are we supposed to change ourselves before we admit the standard was never neutral?

Knowing Black history can protect you from being gaslit about your own reality. 🖤📚 It gives you the context to recognize when history is being distorted, erased, or weaponized against you, and it helps you move through the world with a little less naivety about the spaces you’re entering. 👀

You understand the room differently when you know the history behind the systems, stereotypes, and assumptions that may already be waiting for you there. 🧠✊🏾

There is nothing wrong with being proud of knowing where you come from and what your people have contributed, endured, and built. 💚✨

You really can be comfortable and completely lost at the same time. You can also be prayed up and still choosing the same thing every day. 💚

At some point the only thing left to do is be honest about which one you actually want.

Joy is historical evidence, too. The ordinary moments matter because they remind us that Black life has always been bigger than oppression.

Black history is also just Black people being people.

What’s one joyful memory from your family that deserves to be archived? 📸🖤

The most successful colonization campaign in history didn’t need chains. It needed you to call your own ancestors’ practices “dark” and “evil.” Save this. Send it to someone who still flinches at the word Vodou. 🎭

Imagine telling someone their favorite music, books, or hobbies determine their race. 🫠

Sounds ridiculous when you say it out loud, doesn’t it? Nobody owns curiosity. Let’s retire the idea that hobbies have a race.
