My daughter got an email from a college she's been looking into, and I just had to share this with you quick.
They didn't start with information about courses or what scholarships are available.
They started with this:
"Picture this: cozy hoodie weather, the smell of pumpkin and apple cider, the electric energy of game day on a Saturday."
That was the opening line.
No mention of anything about college.
Here's the thing I want you to take from this.
Marketing is happening around you all the time, and once you start paying attention, you can learn from almost anything. A college email, a commercial, a text from your favorite boutique. It's all teaching you something if you slow down and notice why it works.
In this case, they know exactly who they're talking to. A teenager who's picturing what her life could look like, and a parent standing behind her, wanting the best for their kiddo.
So instead of selling facts, they sold a moment. Fall leaves, warm cider, that first walk across a new campus.
This is what I mean when I talk about knowing your ideal client and telling a story instead of listing features.
Your customer doesn't fall in love with your product because of the specs. They fall in love because they can picture themselves using it, wearing it, gifting it, or standing in your shop feeling something.
So here's your homework this week.
Think about one thing you sell.
What does the moment feel like when someone brings it home?
What's their before & after when they buy your product?
Write that down before you write anything else, and let that feeling lead your next post.
And starting today, notice one piece of marketing that catches you off guard. An email, an ad, a sign in a window. Ask yourself why it worked. That's where a lot of your best ideas will come from.
