France Records Deadliest Heatwave Night as Nearly 40 Drown Seeking Relief from Extreme Temperatures
At least 40 people, mostly young, drowned in France while trying to cool off in unsupervised swimming spots amid an intense heatwave sweeping across much of Europe.
The country experienced its hottest night on record, with temperatures nearing 40°C (104°F), leading to multiple heat-related deaths including two young children.
The extreme heat, driven by a weather pattern trapping hot air from the Sahara, has prompted widespread warnings and emergency measures across the continent.
