In Main Street America's Spring 2026 Small Business Survey, 2,421 business owners responded from all 50 states, and the findings say a lot about the work happening right here in downtown Meadville.

When owners were asked what role they play in their community, here's how they answered:

🏘️ 47% are a destination, the reason somebody drives into town
☕ 30% are a gathering place, where neighbors actually run into each other
📣 26% see themselves as champions of the local economy
🛠️ 21% make the thing they sell, right here at home

That's not a side benefit of running a shop. For most of these owners, it's the point.

Here's the part that matters most to us. Businesses connected to a Main Street program reported rising revenue at a higher rate than those without that support, 33% compared to 26%. Confidence among owners is up to 7.2 out of 10, climbing for the third survey in a row.

Costs are still tight. 63% named rising inventory and supply costs as their top concern. That's where all of us come in. Every dollar spent downtown lands in a neighbor's register.

Thank you to everyone who both came to our presentation on our efforts to gain a Creative District designation through PA Creative Industries and who offered insights and ideas that lead to valuable opportunities for Meadville's artisans and creative economy. In addition to Amara Geffen walk everyone through the program, Heather Fish, founder of Hatch Hollow explained how the Covation Center | PA Small Business Education program can support creative entrepreneurs. Thank you too, to the French Creek Arts Collective for hosting this event in their space. It was a super productive conversation and opportunity for Meadville makers to network and exchange ideas.

Hatch Hollow will offer a 10-part cohort class for local business owners as part of the new Meadville Business Assistance Center at Hatch Hollow. Classes start Monday evening (9/14) from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. They’ll be in-person at Hatch Hollow, co-facilitated by Gary Svetz and Heather Fish.
