While they are instrumental to grabbing journalists' attention, often clients expect and require them to result in immediate media placements. For restricted activities like an event or a campaign, for example, clients typically require media placement to earn your fee. That puts a lot of pressure on to create the most creative and compelling press releases!

We all do and as a society, we put a high value on consistency as a personal trait. Folks who are inconsistent are considered disorganized, unreliable, and even incompetent. No one wants to be perceived that way so invoking the consistency principle is a useful tactic to persuading audiences, especially resistant ones. Founder of Writing with Clarity, Ken O'Quinn explained in today's PRSA webinar titled "Influencing Your Audience" that "people want to live up to their commitments, their actions to match their self image, and to be consistent with past actions." By challenging or appealing to an individual or group's sense of consistency will help steer them towards your idea or cause.

O'Quinn used a fundraising example to illustrate this principle. Who can a fundraiser typically rely on to donate for a cause? Previous years' donors, of course. Correspondence to past donors invokes the consistency principle with language about how important their donation was in the past and is necessary for a sustained future.

Another example is the concept of legal precedent. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys will invoke relevant legal precedent to make compelling arguments. They will refer to previous judgements in cases similar to their own to illustrate why their argument is correct in order to persuade a judge or jury.

The principle of consistency is helpful not only to marketers and PR pros but to anyone hoping to persuade certain behaviors or thoughts.
