The Quarantini 🍸

This piece I’m fond of came up recently in my memories ☺️

I was finishing my senior year of college when Covid hit, and one of my last assignments was to create an invitation. The situation inspired me to create an invite for a virtual happy hour! 🥂

From the fun fonts, playful colors, and vintage design elements, this is still one of my favorite pieces. There’s hardly anything I’d change about it even four years into my career as a graphic designer 🩵

Day 12: Stuck

It’s actually a total myth that ostriches stick their heads in the ground to hide from predators! 🙈 Since they are flightless birds, ostriches lay their eggs in holes dug into the ground rather than nests in trees. They occasionally stick their heads into the holes to check on the eggs and turn them, hence the myth. Did you know that it was just a myth before today??

Day 11: Sour

I imagine the cane toad’s poisonous toxin is s o u r 😵‍💫🐸 The cane toad is native to South and Central America, but it was introduced to Australia in 1935 to control beetles that were destroying the sugarcane crops. Cane toads are hardy creatures, and Australia has no natural predators or diseases that help control the toad’s numbers. As a result, cane toads are now an invasive species to the island nation. Just what we need: another creature that will kill you in Australia 🙃😝

Day 10: Pick

I was inspired by seeing the macaques at pick through each other’s fur. 🐵🤏🏽🐵 Have you ever seen monkeys do this?? The behavior is known as social grooming. Grooming one another helps not only to remove parasites, but to maintain the complex social bonds between them as well.

I kept this one simple today to make sure I could catch up. What do you think of this minimalistic style compared to the more intricate drawings I’ve been doing the past few days? Let me know!👇

Day 9: Pressure

The nautilus lives in the deep waters of the east Indian and west Pacific Oceans. 🌊 Nautili (or nautiluses; you can use either!) are cephalopods, meaning they are closely related to octopi, squids, and cuttlefish. Nautilus shells have inside chambers, or compartments, which they use for buoyancy control. As the nautilus grows, it closes off sections of the chamber it lives in and adds to the open end of the shell, making the shell larger. These mysterious creatures are so neat! 🤩
charlie I thought of you when I was drawing this one today! Would you please sign my petition to make a nautilus emoji a thing?? 🥺

Day 8: Watch

Leopards are mostly nocturnal and typically hunt at night. They are skilled climbers, often carrying their prey up into the trees to keep their meals away from scavengers such as hyenas. During the day, leopards like to rest and lounge around in the trees, giving them a great viewpoint to watch from 🐆

Day 7: Fan

Fun fact about the fan-tailed guppy: since guppies love to eat mosquito larvae, they have been deliberately set free to help lessen the threat of malaria. The “Guppy Movement” was launched in 2014, and within the first 2 years, some places using this method had already seen a 50% drop in cases of mosquito-borne diseases. Super cool! 🐠

Day 6: Spirit

Many Native American tribes believe in spirit animals, animals that are connected to a human spirit for a particular reason. One of those spirit animals is the wolf. Wolves symbolize loyalty, family, friendship, instincts, protection, freedom, playfulness, and other traits 🐺

Drop a ❤️ in the comments if you love wolves!👇

Day 5: Raven

I was SO creative with this one, I KNOW! 😂

Did you know? Ravens are actually quite smart, ranking up there with chimpanzees and dolphins in terms of animal intelligence. Ravens can learn to mimic human speech better than some parrots and have been known to imitate wolves and foxes to attract the predators to carcasses the ravens can’t break open. These birds even often gesture to each other to communicate! Smarty parts 🤓

Day 4: Knot

Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot? Can you tie them in a bow?

I always thought of Dumbo the elephant when I heard that song! 🐘

In addition to its ears, another one of the elephant’s distinctive features is its trunk. There are about 40,000 muscles in an elephant’s trunk! Comparatively, humans only have roughly 600 muscles in our entire body.

Day 3: Vessel

A ribbon eel emerging from a vessel🏺

Ribbon eels have long, protruding nostrils that are leaf-like in appearance. Ribbon eels use their nostrils to sense vibrations in the water which helps them hunt and defend themselves. Like moray eels, divers often mistake ribbon eels as being aggressive, as they are commonly seen with their mouths opening and closing in what could be interpreted as a threatening manner. However, they are simply breathing when they do this.

Day 2: Suit

The first animal I thought of with this prompt was a penguin! 🐧 They have these “suits” to protect them from predators. From above, penguins blend into the dark depths of the water. From below, penguins blend into the bright, sun-lit waters above. This type of camouflage is called counter shading.
