Most organizations know what they want. Few know how they plan to get there.

In our research, 93.4% of organizations reported clear goals and objectives.

But clarity dropped significantly when we examined the factors most directly tied to achieving those goals:

Customer Definition: 66.3%
Need Definition: 67.9%
Competitive Logic: 51.0%
Economic Logic: 48.5%
Differentiation: 43.4%
Positioning: 20.4%

The largest gap? A 73% difference between clarity of objectives and clarity of positioning.

The implication is simple:

Many organizations have clear ambitions, but lack equally clear commercialization logic.

They know where they want to go. They're far less certain about why customers buy, how they create advantage, and how they'll win in the market.

Could this help explain why so many growth initiatives fail despite strong intentions?

Most business owners have growth goals.

But having a goal and having a realistic strategy to reach it are two very different things.

In our survey of 400+ businesses, over 90% of CEOs had set growth goals — but barely 20% had a realistic strategy for achieving them.

We’re continuing the study and would really appreciate input from other business owners and leaders.

It takes about 8–10 minutes, and participants can receive a copy of the findings.

Everyone thinks they know why businesses succeed or fail.

Leadership. Strategy. Ex*****on. Talent. Capital. Market conditions.

That's the conventional wisdom.

But after surveying more than 400 businesses, we found something else entirely.

The strongest predictor of success had an R-value of .71 — and it wasn't leadership, ex*****on, strategy, competition, timing, or any of the usual suspects.

If you're building a business, growing a company, or leading an initiative, you may want to know what actually matters.

The first round of results from the Business Initiative Study is in.

Preliminary findings show that our model can predict business success or failure with an 85% confidence interval.

If the findings hold, it could change how companies think about growth, transformation, marketing, operations, and ex*****on.

What if we could predict business failure with an 85% certainty?

The first round of results from the Business Initiative Study is in.

Preliminary findings show that our model can predict the success or failure of a business initiative with an 85% confidence interval.

That's important because most explanations for business failure focus on symptoms: poor ex*****on, bad timing, weak leadership, market conditions, lack of resources, and dozens of other factors.

What if those are simply downstream effects of something more fundamental?

We're continuing to collect data and validate the model.

If you've been involved in growth initiatives, marketing programs, transformations, product launches, sales efforts, or operational improvements, we'd value your input.

The first round of results from the Business Initiative Study is in.

So far, the model is able to predict business success—or failure—with an 85% confidence interval.

That's significant because, despite decades of research, most explanations for business failure still focus on symptoms: poor ex*****on, weak leadership, bad timing, market conditions, lack of resources, and countless other factors.

Our findings suggest there may be a deeper pattern underlying many of these outcomes.

We're continuing to collect data and validate the model, and we'd like your input.

If you've been involved in a business initiative, growth effort, transformation project, product launch, marketing campaign, or sales initiative, we'd appreciate your perspective.

Announcing a New Study on Business Failure Mode Analysis - Be a part of the study at www.LeadGen.com/Research

Depending on the study, somewhere between 70% and 90% of major business initiatives fail to achieve their intended objectives. And yet the explanations are always different.

Leadership.
Ex*****on.
Market timing.
Competition.
Funding.
Sales.
Marketing.
Operations.
Resistance to change.

But what if many of these initiatives are actually exhibiting the same underlying deterioration patterns?

That’s one of the questions behind The Business Initiative Study.

We’re looking for participants with experience in:

• growth initiatives
• digital transformation
• scaling initiatives
• go-to-market initiatives
• operational transformation
• product launches
• commercialization efforts

If you’ve led or participated in one, we’d appreciate your input.

80% of new product launches fail.

Not because companies aren't smart.
Not because they don't work hard.
And not because they lack data.

Yet after decades of research, billions of dollars spent, and countless post-mortems, we're still being told that failure comes down to things like "customer understanding," "validation," and "feedback loops."

After working with thousands of businesses over the last 40 years, we believe there's a deeper pattern—one that explains why so many initiatives fail before they ever have a chance to succeed.

Now we're testing that hypothesis. Participate at www.LeadGen.com/Research

If you've ever launched a product, started a business, led a growth initiative, rolled out a new strategy, or watched a promising idea fall short, we'd like your perspective.

Take the survey below and help us identify what actually causes business initiatives to fail—and how to prevent it.

Or keep guessing.
