The Cabbage Patch Doll started to be handmade by a 21-year-old art student named Martha Nelson who wasn't much of a business person but had a love for crafts. She mostly sold her dolls at craft fairs and other outdoor venues, but she called them 'Little People'.
Cleveland, Ga 1972
Xavier Roberts who was also an art student himself, and a savvy business person, stole her design and marketed the dolls as his own. He dreamed of creating an empire as large as Disney with these dolls. He called them 'Little People Originals' and started selling them through "Baby Nurseries". He eventually started calling them Cabbage Patch Kids.
At this point, Martha contacted a lawyer but lost the ownership battle because at this point he had acquired a copyright on the doll and his marketing had taken the product far beyond where she ever wanted to take it. She got an undisclosed payment and went on with her life.
What Roberts did was clearly wrong - ambition unchecked by ethics will risk harming others. Yet there’s wisdom here too - creators should do what they can to protect their ideas, then partner with people who will expand those visions.
I know a lot of people out there like Martha who are proud of what little they've created, but they just don't see themselves growing a lasting legacy so they don't even try.
Maybe they don't want a large business. It's ok to know what you do and don't want. But, sadly many of them don't think they're "that type of person". Perhaps they don't feel "good enough".
That's just a simple mindset issue that can be overcome by partnering with people who dare to dream bigger than they do. Whether they partner with a great Business Coach or a talented Marketing star, they just need a partner they can trust.
Don't try to be everything for your business. If you create, that's great! Just create and let someone else handle your marketing plan and take your business to the moon and back. You'll never know what heights you can reach if you don't try. 😉
