This is very important

If you’re an independent artist trying to grow on social media, stop treating your account like a place where you only show up to POST. 👀

Social media is supposed to be SOCIAL.

Spend time engaging with artists in your niche, responding to comments, joining conversations, and actually getting to know the communities you’re trying to reach.

Here’s what I’d focus on:

• Engage with creators and artists in your niche
• Leave thoughtful comments, not generic emojis
• Respond to people interacting with your content
• Pay attention to what your target audience is discussing
• Use those conversations to inspire your next content ideas

And yes, what you watch and engage with helps shape your own recommended feed, which can be useful for researching your niche.

But here’s the important part: engaging doesn’t automatically guarantee Instagram will push your content.

Think of it as community building, audience research, and developing a stronger content strategy.

You can’t build a community if you’re never participating in one. 🖤

One post flopping does NOT mean the idea was bad.

One of the biggest mistakes artists make with content strategy is changing direction every single time something underperforms.

Sometimes the idea is right and the ex*****on is wrong.

Test a different hook.
Change the first frame.
Rewrite the text overlay.
Try a different visual.
Make the message more specific.
Test it with a different audience.

Then look for patterns.

Content strategy is testing, learning, adjusting, and repeating what actually works.

Don’t throw away a good idea because one version of it got 200 views. 🖤

Very important

Your hook isn’t just what you SAY. It’s what people SEE first.

You can have the perfect opening line, but if the first frame gives someone no reason to stop scrolling, they may never stick around long enough to hear it.

For independent artists creating short-form content, think about your visual hook before you hit record.

Try:
• movement in the first second
• an unexpected location
• a close-up or framing change
• showing the result before explaining it
• an object or visual that creates curiosity
• on-screen text that immediately tells the viewer why they should care

Your verbal hook and visual hook should work together.

Before you post your next Reel, watch the first second with the sound OFF.

Would you stop?

That’s part of your music marketing strategy too. 🖤

One of the most expensive lessons I’ve learned as an independent artist is that paying someone does NOT automatically mean they know what they’re doing.

I’ve hired producers, publicists, marketing companies and other people throughout my career who, looking back, I never should have hired.

Now I ask a lot more questions.

What results have you actually gotten?
Who have you worked with?
Can you show me examples?
What exactly are you doing with my money?
How are we measuring whether this is working?
What happens if it doesn’t?

And please do your own research before handing someone thousands of dollars because they made a great sales pitch.

Building a music career is already expensive enough. You don’t need to make it more expensive by blindly trusting the wrong people.

I learned some of this the hard way. Hopefully you don’t have to. 🖤

If you’re an independent artist trying to grow your audience, “women 18–24” is not enough information.

You need to know who those people actually are.

What are they watching?
What are they wearing?
What other artists do they love?
What shows, movies, games, aesthetics, and communities are they part of?
What are they talking about online?
What kind of content do they save and share?

The more specific you get, the easier it is to create music marketing and content that actually feels like it was made for the right person.

Audience building is not just demographics. It’s understanding the culture, interests, identity, and behavior of the people you want to reach.

That’s how you stop posting for “everyone” and start building a real fanbase.

If your content only makes sense to people who already know you, you’re making it harder for new fans to discover you.

Before posting, look at the video like a complete stranger.

Would they understand what’s happening?
Would the story or emotion mean something without knowing the song?
Is there a reason to stop scrolling?
Does it create enough curiosity to visit your profile?

Your existing fans already have context. Your future fans don’t.

Good artist content strategy gives strangers an entry point into your world first, then lets the music become part of the discovery.

Before blaming reach, ask whether your content was actually designed for discovery.
