As businesses are feeling the need to tighten the belt and cut expenses, one of the questions many are asking right now is: "Do we still need a website, or is social media enough?"

And yes, I know what some people are probably thinking: "Of course the SEO strategist is going to say yes."

But the real answer depends on your business goals.

If your goal is simply to maintain a social presence, stay connected with your audience and give people a place to casually engage with your business, then no, you may not need a website.

If your goal is to have a professional online home where you can direct people for more information, then yes, a brochure-style website may still make sense.

But if your goal is to be found in Google, recommended by AI tools and build online brand recognition, then yes, you absolutely still need a website.

And not just a website with a few catchphrases on it. Anyone can put polished language on a website. That is not the same thing as having website content that actually supports those messages in a way people can trust and search engines can validate behind the scenes.

That's where my specialty comes into play. My services go beyond basic web design, and even beyond technical SEO. My strength is in the strategic planning, content structure and behind-the-scenes implementation that turns a website from a digital brochure into something that actually helps your business grow.

Social media can help people notice you and stay familiar with your brand. But your website still carries more weight when it comes to search visibility, because it is the clearest and most complete source of information that search and AI engines look to for understanding and trusting your business.

That is a big part of my Horse and Cart Theory. Traditional SEO treated visibility and the website like two separate parts of the process. In today's search landscape, they work in tandem. The same website content that helps search and AI engines understand your business also helps real people decide whether to trust you and take action.

So no, this is not really a website versus social media question. It is a business goals question.

If your goal is to be found, recommended and chosen, your website still matters.

For a lot of people, focusing on content for the user instead of the search engines feels backwards. Like it's putting the cart before the horse.

That made sense for a long time. SEO used to be driven by keyword matching, so the focus was on what the search engines needed in order to rank a page.

That's not how it works today.

Now, the way a website is understood comes from the content itself and the experience it creates. That's what drives visibility. Rankings follow that understanding.

You can actually see this play out in real time in Google Search Console, even on a site that was launched just four months ago.

In one phase, impressions were going up while average position was worse. On the surface, that looks like something went wrong. This is usually where people start second guessing everything and trying to fix things that don't need fixing.

But nothing was actually wrong.

That was Google expanding visibility and testing where the site fits across a wider range of searches.

In the following period, impressions held steady and rankings improved. Once the site was understood, everything started to settle into place.

That's how this works now.

This is The WooWoo Approach™ at work.

If you're wondering how your own website is coming across and what kind of experience it's actually creating, that's exactly what I evaluate in my SEO audits.

One of the questions I hear quite often when people reach out about SEO is some version of:

"If you're focused on the human experience on the website, how does that actually help me get found in search results?"

It's a fair question. That's how SEO has worked for a long time. For years, the mindset was to focus on rankings first, then worry about what happens once someone lands on the site. So when I explain that my SEO strategy is to focus on how humans experience their website, that can feel backwards... kind of like a "horse before the cart" approach.

But that's not how search engines work anymore. Over the past several years, I've been watching that shift happen in real time, and a recent industry study by Semrush actually confirmed what I've been seeing.

Because search engines are now interpreting content much more like a human would, they're trying to understand who you are, what you do, and what makes you different. And that understanding is what drives whether your site shows up in the first place.

So it's not about choosing between focusing on rankings or the on-site experience. They're connected now. The same content that helps someone understand and trust your business also helps search engines and AI decide to recommend it.

That's the shift most people haven't fully caught up to yet. But, it's the foundation behind how I approach SEO.

Over the years, I've noticed something interesting in the SEO world.

Almost every conversation about search seems to start with tactics.

Keywords. Backlinks. The newest AI tools.

But when I'm working with clients, the real question people are trying to answer when they land on a website is much simpler:

"Is this the right person or business to help me?"

That question hasn't changed much, even though search technology has.

So I finally sat down and wrote an article explaining the philosophy behind how I build websites and SEO strategies for my clients. It's something I now refer to as The WooWoo Approach™.

It's not about chasing every change in the algorithm.

It's about building search visibility that continues working as search evolves.

I often talk about visibility, intent, and long-term SEO foundations. But sometimes the real question a business is asking is much simpler:

“Is our website actually working for us?”

That’s why I’ve begun offering written SEO audits built on The WooWoo Approach™.

These are not automated reports generated by a tool. When I conduct an audit, I review the site myself, page by page. I look at how the business is presenting themselves, what a visitor is likely experiencing in those first few moments, and how search and AI engines are interpreting the same signals.

There are nuances in messaging, positioning, and intent that software cannot recognize.

Sometimes progress begins with stepping back and evaluating before pushing forward.

I often get asked: Since your name is "WooWoo" does that mean you use "woo-woo" ideology in your work?

No.

The name WooWoo comes from my husky, Nawla. She's the dog in my logo. Like many huskies, she woo-woos instead of barking, which is how she earned the nickname "my WooWoo girl."

The name itself is not tied to spirituality, mysticism, or "woo-woo" belief systems. Any correlation is purely coincidental and unintentional.

That question started coming up only after the name did. It makes sense given the word, but the work itself has always been practical and grounded. The WooWoo Approach is a human-centered methodology for SEO and website strategy, built around how real people search, read, and make decisions.

The goal is clarity. For humans first, and for search and AI engines second. There's nothing abstract about the process. It's about helping the right people find a business and understand it well enough to become customers.

I receive a lot of great questions about what I do from current and prospective clients - even from friends and family. So, I thought I'd take some time each week to answer some of those questions.

Would you please explain what SEO means?

Sure! SEO is search engine optimization. It makes a website readable for search engines like Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc.

Now, in the age of AI, that also includes helping AI-powered search tools understand a business or person clearly enough to reference them in their answers and recommendations. That adds a few extra layers of complexity to my approach to search engine optimization, but the goal is still the same: making sure your website is being found by people who are looking for what you offer.

Without SEO, a website is basically just sitting out there, relying on word of mouth or paid ads for people to visit it.

This went live today — a Nashville Voyager feature on the story behind WooWoo WebWorks and how the WooWoo Approach came together over time.

It’s a bit more personal than what I usually share here, but if you’ve ever wondered why I work the way I do, this explains it pretty well.

Yesterday I shared a post about how Google’s latest core update shows search is no longer just about keywords — it’s about understanding businesses.

Today, I get to show you what that looks like in the real world.

Less than a month after launching my redesigned website — built with SEO, AI search, and human understanding in mind — Google is already able to explain what makes WooWoo WebWorks different from other SEO agencies.

Not just rank pages.
Not just match keywords.
But clearly articulate:

* how I work
* who I work with
* and why my approach is different

It even correctly identifies and names The WooWoo Approach™ as part of what sets my business apart.

This is exactly what I was talking about in my previous post.

Search is no longer about “optimizing pages.” It’s about helping search engines and AI systems truly understand a business the same way a real person would.

When a website clearly communicates what a business does, who they help, and how they work, Google doesn’t just rank it — it recognizes it.

As we head into 2026, this is what modern SEO looks like. And it turns out, a human-first approach isn’t becoming obsolete — it’s becoming essential.

Google’s latest update shows that search rankings are no longer about matching keywords. Google is now deciding which websites to rank based on how well they understand what the businesses do, who they help, and what makes them different — much like a real person would.

Google is in the middle of rolling out a new core update that won't be complete until mid-January. This update affects the algorithm that decides what websites to show in what order. Everyone's goal is to be shown in the top of these search results, so the better I can understand what Google is looking for to make a website achieve those top ranking placements, the more likely the sites I build and optimize will rank well.

In this new update, it's become very clear that Google is moving past simply matching keywords on web pages for their search results. Google is now able to explain — in plain language — what a business offers, how it works, and what makes it different. Almost the way a person would. That’s what we’re seeing with AI Overviews (the summaries that Google sometimes shows at the top of their search results page).

You may have noticed that in 2025 Google also introduced AI Mode for people who want to dive deeper into their research, and made significant updates to their conversational AI app, Gemini. These were signs that Google was investing heavily in modern search technology.

And now this current update shows us that Google is taking those same AI capabilities and will apply them to their traditional search results.

Going forward, websites that clearly communicate:

* what the business does
* who they help
* how they're different
* and what they're trying to accomplish

are the ones Google is more likely to reward with strong rankings.

This is why many “traditional SEO” practices are quietly becoming obsolete — not because Search Engine Optimization is dead or disappearing, but because it's evolving. It’s about helping search engines and AI systems accurately understand a business as a whole, in much the same way a real person would.

So, the real takeaway from this current Google update is that modern SEO isn't coming. It's already here. And it turns out, the human-first approach I’ve always taken with my WooWoo Approach™ is more relevant — and more effective — than ever.

If you’re curious how this looks in practice, I explain my approach in more detail on my website.

The new WooWoo WebWorks website is officially live.

This upgrade has been on my to-do list for a while, and I finally made the time to rebuild it the same way I approach client projects — clear structure, clean code, and content that answers the kinds of questions people bring to Google and AI engines while still being easy for real humans to read and understand.

Finding that balance is where modern SEO really lives, and it’s something I’m always mindful of.

I also used this project to fully apply The WooWoo Approach™ to my own website. It’s the methodology I’ve shaped over the years around SEO, AI visibility, and local relevance — nothing flashy or gimmicky, just a thoughtful way of helping search engines understand a business with clarity.

What’s been encouraging is how quickly the new build settled in. Within about 36 hours, the site began showing up in Google’s AI Overview and in a few key searches I wasn’t expecting to see movement on quite that fast.

I’m always excited when client sites gain traction quickly, so seeing my own do the same has been a nice little moment. 😊

If you’re curious, here’s the updated site: WooWooWebWorks.com
